Last semester, our freshman students received training during their PE classes  on a series of breathing techniques that can serve as easy, practical tools for managing stress, energy, and focus. Come learn about the program and how you can support your child at home to continue practicing these calming techniques that will help them maintain health and wellness.  A video of the kids' testimonials and survey results will be shared.
Coffee and breakfast treats will be served from 8:15 am to 8:45 am.8:15 am to 8:45 am.  
Come for the extended social time to talk to other parents about how the year is going and share course selection stories.

We want to provide this as an opportunity to get inspired by science and make great things! Paly's Challenge Success Committee invites all  Paly parents, students, and staff to read Frank Bruni's book about the college admissions process and how we can have a more balanced approach to this process. The committee will be hosting a student-teacher-parent "fishbowl" and discussion on Wednesday, February 21 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the MAC. We invite parents, students, and staff to attend and hear perspectives from representatives from all three groups.

Rise Together Education 
This is a 501(c) (3) tax-exempt public charity with the mission to provide mentoring and financial support to low income college bound students graduating from Palo Alto High School. The students are supported throughout their 4 years of college with this 2018 class being the third group of graduates that need our help. Our goal for 2018 is to raise $400,000 and to support 51 low income students to attend college in the fall of 2018.
The board consists of faculty and community volunteers that meet once a month for 2 hours to discuss the mentoring and student support along with fundraising activities. Passionate about  assisting with equity amongst our PALY student's college education? We need volunteers to serve on the board or help with our 2nd Annual Fundraising Auction and Talent Show  March 22nd . Average time  commitment is 5 hours a month. Interested and would like to learn more about the mission of  Rise  Together Education?

Food/ Beverages donations needed for the Wellness Center
Our students are very happy when there are tea and snacks available in the Wellness Center! Once again we seek your help in providing decaffeinated tea bags, cocoa, healthy nut free foods, fresh fruit and vegetable trays for the kids who stop by the Wellness Center. If you are interested in donating any of these items, please drop them off in the Wellness Center, located in the Tower Building, anytime during the school day. Paly Tower Building; Ongoing;  Light refreshments for teens during the school week
So many students just don't have time to get breakfast before heading off to school in the mornings. We, in the Main Office have been offering snacks (bars, crackers, fruit snacks, etc.) to any student who needs a pick-me-up at brunch in the Tower Building Hallway. Every single day, 40 -50 kids grab something to keep them going until lunch (For some it is their lunch, and their breakfast). If anyone wants to contribute, here is a link to an Amazon Wishlist. Fiery Arts Glass Workshops at Palo Alto High School

Expanding Your Horizons in Math and Science Conference

At this conference for 6-12th grade young women, students have the opportunity to meet women who use math and science in their careers. Over 100 women working in related fields will lead hands-on workshops that include experiments and a discussion of career options and educational requirements. College Rep Visits for Seniors (and Juniors, if space is available) 
Students must have their teacher's permission one day in advance if missing class. Pick up a form in the C&CC, or download it at admit-class-form-college-and-career-center . Bring the signed form the day of the visit to ensure the absence from class is cleared and marked as an activity rather than a truancy. College visits scheduled for the next two weeks are listed below. For a full list of all visits through Spring, login to Naviance using your user ID and password; click on the "Colleges" tab then click "view all upcoming college visits" within the "my colleges" section. Secondary School Lunch Ala Carte Tasting Day NEW

The Student Nutrition Services Department, in conjunction with the PAUSD Wellness Council, have been requested to review and adjust the ala carte snack selections available for students to purchase at the secondary schools. The main emphasis of the review is to offer healthier alternatives. All secondary students, parents and interested community members are welcome. Student and parent input into the potential replacements is important.  Feedback and any additional suggestions will be collected via a short survey conducted at the event. There will be a Label Reading Activity available for students and chance to win prizes in a  drawing. It is our plan to begin making changes effective the week students return from Spring Break.

The PTA Council Nominating Committee is currently seeking both nominations and expressions of interest from individuals in the community who would like to learn more about becoming a member of the PTA Executive Board for the 2018/19 school year.  We are looking for community members who demonstrate strong leadership skills and have a passion for improving the educational experience of all students, preferably have experience on their school PTA or site council, and are interested in stepping into a leadership role at the district level.

2018 Annual Sweetheart Awards - Call for Nominations

Nominate Great People for Awards (Due March 1)
Each year the Palo Alto Council of PTAs may bestow one of several California State PTA Honorary Service Awards to individuals or organizations that have demonstrated outstanding service to children and youth in our community.  The individuals or organization nominated must make far-reaching, notable contributions.  The PTA Council HSA Committee selects persons or groups who have benefited children and youth on a district-wide or Palo Alto community level.
We also have a new award that debuted last year that honors exceptional PTA volunteers at the unit (school) level.   Each PTA may nomination one person.

Stanford Food and Mood Study is Recruiting!
Eligible participants are between 9-17 years old, are experiencing low moods or irritability, have a body mass index greater than 85%, do not have braces or metal in their body
Participants receive $325 for completing the study.  Participants come in for clinical and cognitive evaluations, an MRI brain scan and a blood test 3 times over 2 years.

Stanford University & City of Palo Alto Comp Growth
There is a significant project from Stanford University that will be coming upon PAUSD that may require your attention -- Stanford University's growth and expansion proposal and its impact within our city and school district.  Stanford plans to add more academic and support facilities, housing units, childcare center and facilities to its camp, adding approx. 9,000 people to our area.  Your comments regarding the significant environmental effects of this project and the adequacy of the Draft EIR are welcome.  The public review period for this Draft EIR ends on Feb 2, 2018
 
Ongoing Stanford University Brain Study on Executive Function Skills

Music Teacher's Scholarship Concert NEW

Tickets: $15.00 adult ($20.00 at door) / $5.00 student/senior.  For Presale tickets, send check and Self Addressed Stamped Envelope to Music Office, 25E Churchill Ave. Palo Alto, CA 94306 or call 650-3239-3944.  Proceeds from the Music Teachers' Scholarship Concert will be used to award scholarships to PAUSD music students in grades 4 - 8.  Scholarship money may be used to attend summer music camps, workshops or lessons, or to purchase instruments and supplies.  Students who attend the concert will be given priority for their preferred audition time.  Auditions will be held on Feb 26 th and should be of 4 minutes or less and should include two scales and an etude.  Students will only be allowed to audition on the instrument/voice they play in their school performing ensemble.  Fourth grade general music students may audition on recorder or voice.  No piano scholarships will be awarded.  Contestants are evaluated with other students of the same age and/or ability level.  See your music teacher or call the music office at 329-3944 for more information.

After three hugely successful summers, Paly's distinguished journalism program will be returning again this summer with its fourth year of Camp MAC (Media Arts Center) on July 30th - August 3th.  A new leadership team and with a plethora of journalism experience is in place and eager to educate new campers on a variety of journalistic skills including critical thinking, research, graphic design, and expository writing techniques.  Counselors are the fun and qualified students of Paly's seven publications.  The camp is open to all rising 8th and 9th graders, all proceeds support Paly's journalism program for the following year.  Registration and more information can be found at this website: paly.io/campmac .

Spanish Language Immersion Opportunity for High School Students - Oaxaca, Mexico (Summer 2018) - Applications Due Now!
Find out how families live in other parts of the world.  There is no better way to do this than by living as a member of a family in another country and then sharing your home with your "sister" or "brother" from that family when you return home.  Neighbors Abroad, Palo Alto's sister city organization, has sponsored summer student exchanges since 1965.  Applicants should be high school students at least 15 years old by June of 2018 who are studying Spanish at any level.  For more information, contact Marion at  [email protected] ; to learn about Neighbors Abroad, visit  www.neighborsabroad.org .
