NC Wesleyan Athletics Announces 2017 Hall Of Fame Inductees

Rocky Mount, N.C. - The purpose of the North Carolina Wesleyan Athletics Hall of Fame is to recognize and honor those individuals, who through their superior athletic achievements or by their outstanding service, have made long-lasting, exemplary contributions to the college. Beginning with its inaugural class in 1999, Wesleyan has bestowed this honor upon 67 former athletes, administrators, and coaches who created a higher standard for our Bishops. This year's inductees meet those same standards and will comprise the 19th class of honorees. The Department of Athletics is pleased to announce that long-time head coach and administrator John Thompson, as well as two of his former players, Bradley Blue and Keith Sudler, are the latest additions to the N.C. Wesleyan Athletics Hall of Fame.
Entering his 23rd season as head men's basketball coach and 20th as Director of Athletics, John Thompson is honored to headline the 2017 class. The all-time winningest coach in men's basketball history, he has compiled over 300 victories and six USA South Championships during his tenure, while his resume as Director of Athletics is equally as impressive.
"I am honored, but more so humbled to have been elected to the North Carolina Wesleyan Hall of Fame," said Thompson. "I have witnessed every induction since our inaugural 1999 class, and to be mentioned with all of Wesleyan's outstanding players, coaches, administrators, and contributors is quite incredible!"   Read more...

Mikah Brondyke Named New Youth Theology Director

North Carolina Wesleyan College has hired Mikah Brondyke as Director of its Youth Theology Institute. Funded by a grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc., the program provides high school students with the opportunity to explore their calling and put faith into action through hands-on learning and community service.

The Wesleyan Youth Theology Institute (YTI) kicked off its inaugural season last July with 38 participants in a week-long residential camp on the Wesleyan campus, far more than the college expected for its first year.  The residential experience was followed by a year of mentorship, practice, and continued connection to the YTI community.

According to Kathryn Carroll, YTI Director and Program Coordinator, it is clear the program made a meaningful impression on the lives of the students as evidenced by the level of participation in the year-long mentorship program, the number of students who returned to a recent reunion dinner, and the continued outreach and connectivity to the program's staff.

As YTI gears up for its sophomore season this summer, Carroll hands over the reins to Brondyke, an ordained minister and music educator.

"We are thrilled to welcome Mikah to lead YTI," said Dr. Dewey Clark, Wesleyan President.  "He brings to this position a great deal of experience leading youth in exploring their faith and what God is calling them to do.  He brings energy and passion to our institute."

Carroll, J.D., Professor of Justice Studies at Wesleyan, will act in an advisory capacity during the transition.

Brondyke earned his bachelor of science degree in music education from Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina.  He received his Legal Ordination Certificate in 2012.

Brondyke is currently a chorus teacher at Rocky Mount Middle School as well as Worship Leader and Youth Co-Leader at Fellowship Baptist Church.  Prior to that, he served as teen/children's pastor and music pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Hampton, Georgia.

"I am honored and excited to join Wesleyan's team of faith leaders and lead its YTI program, said Brondyke.  "I look forward to helping students deepen their faith, develop their gifts, and grow as the next generation of leaders in our churches."

Brondyke and his wife, Jessica, have two daughters, Adelyn and Elliana.

The Wesleyan Youth Theology Institute will host two weeks of camp this summer with roughly 50 participants.
