Meow...
Hide! Hide!
I don't know why. I'm a cat so I don't have to justify or explain why I do what I do.
My favorite hiding place is in the bathroom closet in amongst the toilet paper and cleaning supplies. I slowly slip my paw inside the door, pull it open and carefully pick my way into the cabinet. Then I close the door behind me to make sure I'm safe.
Oh, Oh. I can hear my human calling for me; "Winnie", "Winnie", "here kitty, kitty, kitty". As she nears, I tense up and prepare for the attack. Slowly the door opens...I spring and capture my prey on the first try and make her shout, then jump out running for the other end of the house. The plan never fails and the action is like catnip to my disposition.
It must be fun for my human as I can hear her laugh and shout like the little ones that have so much energy and excitement when they visit. Now they are a good reason to hide!
Memo to cat owners:
June is "Adopt A Cat" and "Adopt a Shelter Cat" month. Won't you share the love you have for cats with another less fortunate feline? Now is the time.

A Bright Future for Feline Medicine

|
|
Winn Feline Foundation and the American Association of Feline Practitioner's recently announced their joint scholarship recipients for 2017. The two students, each receiving a $2500 scholarship, are chosen for their individual academic achievements, admirable leadership and profound dedication to the study of feline medicine, health and welfare.

Kaarin Muller
|
|
Kaarin Muller is a fourth year veterinary student at Washington State University. Kaarin was selected as the recipient for her clinical practice interest in feline medicine. Her plans include beginning practice at a cat exclusive veterinary hospital in Boise, ID. Kaarin is an enthusiastic cat lover who recently completed a two week externship at Exclusively Cats Hospital in Michigan.

The other recipient of the scholarships is a third year student, Liberty Sieberg, from Colorado State University who has an interest in research or involvement as a clinical scientist. Liberty recently presented a research poster at the annual veterinary internist meeting (ACVIM) near Washington, D.C. She worked with her mentor, Dr. Jessica Quimby, on a research project titled, "Retrospective study of the efficacy of oral potassium supplementation in cats with chronic kidney disease."
Both students should have a bright future.

BJ Bangs was recently presented with the 2017 Winn Media award at the annual BlogPaws Conference in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Dr. Vicki Thayer, Winn's Executive Director, made the announcement in a streaming video at this unique conference's awards ceremony. BlogPaws highlights the work of all the bloggers, writers and individuals who promote information about pets.
BJ Bangs was selected for the award in part because she absolutely loves cats. Her blog,
Paws for Reflection, discusses serious and not-so serious issues about cats. In her blog, BJ focuses on anything and everything that impacts cats around the world. This includes travel, book reviews, rescue, state and local legislation affecting pets, and problems caused by pet overpopulation.
Currently she is focusing on promoting the Feline Fix by Five program endorsed by Winn and other organizations through sharing the initiative's goals and story.

Important Planned Giving Tip for June
|
|
|
An often overlooked way to make charitable contributions is by using other peoples' money. Socially conscious businesses may donate a portion of their proceeds to charity or by offering matching funds.
For example, the online retailer Amazon has a program called Amazon Smile. By enrolling and using the "Smile" site Amazon will make donations of 0.5% of qualifying purchases. You need to sign up and select the Winn Feline Foundation Inc. Winn also works with the IGive and Giving Assistant programs to receive additional contributions.
Some employers will match employee donations to qualified charities (usually up to a certain amount). If your employer has a matching program but needs additional information to include Winn we can assist them with any paperwork. When you donate, the following email acknowledgment has a method to check if your employer will offer a matching donation or view Winn's matching gift program webpage.
Don't forget at tax time that you can only deduct the amount of your charitable contributions, not money given by others.

Dealing with a fearful cat?
The introduction of a cat into a new household goes smoothly for most cats, however the change can be very traumatic for some.
This can result in a cat experiencing a great sense of fear or existential crisis. Information
is available on what a veterinary behavior expert advises for helping to alleviate fear and encourage a smooth transition for a skittish cat.
