Hi all,
I have a magic wand in my briefcase. Sometimes I pull it out and wave it around at a meeting to make the point that it's just not as easy as we want it to be.
From Chapter 6 of "Secrets of a Successful Organizer:"
What we need to do is often simple, but not easy. It's hard to carve out time for conversations, really listen, and keep chipping away at obstacles that take time to overcome. It's often tempting to seize on something that promises quick results. Maybe this new cellphone app will get our co-workers excited about the union! If we start ordering pizza for our meetings, everyone will come! But what sounds too good to be true, probably is.
The basics of organizing don't change. You can't wave a magic wand and instantly get power on the job. That only comes by doing the patient work of building relationships, identifying issues, and running campaigns. As famed organizer Fred Ross put it: "Shortcuts usually end in detours, which lead to dead ends."
Here are a few examples of shortcuts that will work against you in the long run:
- Solving the problem yourself by going to management alone, instead of getting co-workers to come with you.
- Continually relying on the same leaders, instead of developing new ones.
- Shutting down bad ideas, instead of asking questions that help your co-workers realize why the idea won't work - or sometimes even letting them make their own mistakes.
- Using Facebook [or email] to "invite" people to a union activity, instead of having a personal conversation.
And if these lessons sound intriguing, but your first thought is, "that will never work here," please remember that the Region 3 staff is ready and waiting to help you get started!

2018 Every Teacher a Leader Summit @ Lambeau
This year's Summit will be held the evening of April 27, 2018, through the entire day of April 28, 2018, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI. Fifteen (15) teams of educators will be selected to bring their teacher leadership idea, develop that idea into an actionable plan, and meet others who can help them along the way! The application deadline is Sunday, February 18, 2018.

The Dennis Muehl Grant can help!
This grant was created from memorial contributions following Dennis Muehl's death in October 1995. Dennis Muehl was the first Director of Bayland Teachers United, our area's first Uniserv. This grant is open to all WEAC Region 3 members and staff. $300 in grants are awarded annually.
If you are a dues paying member of WEAC Region 3, and you want to attend a grant-qualifying activity that relates to building the Union, Political Action, Public Relations, Membership Training, or the like, then please consider applying for the Dennis Muehl Grant.

2018 Professional Issues Conference
Registration is now open for the 2018 WEAC Professional Issues Conference, which is March 2-4 at the Concourse Hotel in Madison. The conference will focus on the most important lever in improving our schools: building the knowledge and skills of educators. WEAC is committed to professional learning that is continuous, job-embedded, practical, and connected to student achievement. WEAC offers to our members the connections, tools, learning opportunities, and resources they need to promote meaningful and purposeful professional learning and embed it in the school day.
