ACEC Georgia hosted our General Membership Meeting in Savannah in late March. The event, sponsored by Thomas & Hutton and Oldcastle Precast, featured Keynote Speaker Colonel Marvin L. Griffin, P.E., Commander and District Engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Savannah District. Col. Griffin provided an update on the SHEP project, as well as contract opportunities available with the Savannah District.

ACEC Georgia is working with ACEC National and various partners to lobby on behalf of continued funding of the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) program at or above the FY16 level, as well as the full funding of the Transit Capital Investment Grants program at the FAST Act authorization level of $2.3 billion.

As part of this effort, ACEC Georgia signed a letter at the end of last month, along with key statewide and national organizations, requesting the continued funding of these programs. The letter was sent to  the Chairmen and Ranking Members of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Senate Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, House Committee on Appropriations and House Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development.

SHEP Update
The Georgia Ports Authority announced recent developments to the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project effort.

Included in the update: 
  • To date, the Savannah River entrance channel deepening is approximately 60% complete. 
  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has also released new benefit projections. The benefit to cost ratio of the project has significantly increased from 5.5:1 to 7.3:1 - one of the largest returns on investment on a navigation project for taxpayers in the country.
