Youth Lock-in

Members of our youth group, along with our friends from Asbury Broadneck and other peers, had a wonderful time at our end-of-the-year lock-in last Friday night at the church. The kids played laser tag, had a rock painting activity and held an evening worship service together before heading to their sleeping bags for the night. Thank you to all of our chaperones, including Jeff, Jenelle, Crystal from Asbury, and former SMC youth group members for providing a great night of fun and fellowship! For more photos go to our public Facebook page.

Big shout out to the St. Margaret's family --On Sunday Alice and Jeff Conover held a pop-up fundraiser to provide English lessons to a refugee family so that they can get jobs. $20 = an hour of tutoring. In 15 minutes, we raised nearly $800. What a way to celebrate Trinity Sunday! Thank you all for your generosity!

Sunday Sermon

A Note from James

Okay.  I know what I am supposed to write for today's Dragon Tales.  I'm supposed to write about how this Saturday evening marks the end of the Music at St. Margaret's Concert Series with a concert by the Jazz virtuoso Todd Marcus and how rare it is that someone with Egyptian heritage should take up the bass clarinet which is that totally creepy sounding instrument in film scores by Bernard Hermann (like in "Jason and the Argonauts" or "The Day the Earth Stood Still") and makes it sing like a saxophone only more lush and romantic sounding and how this is going to be one terrific concert on this coming Saturday at 7:30 p.m. But to tell you the truth, I really want to write about something else: how proud I am of our church choirs.

We had a terrific final Sunday this past week, Trinity Sunday, singing some of the hardest literature in our repertoire. And the choirs aced it. It was so beautiful and as I sat there at the piano accompanying and hearing the glorious sounds coming towards me, I was thanking God for the miracle of music and the willingness of our choir to work hard and offer some of the best ever composed. I just have to take this opportunity to say that this past year has been filled with one beautiful musical moment after another and so little of it really has to do with me. The work put in by our choir singers is strenuous and constant and always yielding wonderful results.  So the next time you see a choir member, please give them an extra smile or hug and let them know what music means to you and your worship experience. This goes for the Chancel choir, the Motet Ensemble, the youth Chorale, and the Spirit Singers, plus the Third Sunday Band and our instrumentalists. What an amazing group of musicians to work along side and share the joy of worship!

As for the concert series, for those of you who didn't read the article in the Spire, it has lost money this year - the first time ever.  And since it has always been self-sustaining, we need to end its current run. However, there will hopefully be other ways that we can continue to offer the finest music to the community. We have offered any musician in the area the space for giving a concert, setting their own price, and taking home the proceeds. Already, Jazz Guitarist Tony Romano has taken me up on the offer. Look for him on the first weekend in August. We also offer you the opportunity to help defray the costs of concerts like the silent movies with Michael Britt or the Church Circle Singers or Shenandoah Run or Ensemble Galilei. Speak to me if you would like to be a presenting sponsor.

And make sure to attend this Saturday! Todd Marcus is an amazing talent and he and his jazz ensemble will delight your ears.

Camp Allen - Volunteer Sign Up Now!

The 17th annual Camp Allen will be held on July 31-August 4 at the Allen Apartments in the Parole area of Annapolis. It is a half-day camp for an urban housing complex in the city. This project was begun by Rev. Wes Wubbenhorst and Arvilla Wubbenhorst as an outgrowth of Wes' mission work in Honduras. The children look forward to Camp Allen as a highlight of their summer.

To put on this very successful program, we are seeking volunteers for a wide variety of jobs at the camp. We need youth counselors, Spanish speakers to help with registration on Monday and Tuesday, other volunteers to help with purchasing, preparing and serving snacks and lunches, people with large vehicles to help with transportation of tables and supplies, people to help with crafts and games on Monday or Tuesday or to help chaperone field trips on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  We always also need extra hands to do whatever needs to be done.  Any amount of time you would like to devote to the program, we can put you to work!

Education For Ministry - Sign up now

Want to know more about Christianity? About how the Church became what it is today? About the Bible? About your personal ministry?

The EfM program invites you to join small, mentored communities that help us understand our lives and share our actions as we deepen our Christian faith. Through readings and discussions, we shape and define our personal ministry and spiritual growth. The setting is more "sharing" and discovery than "teaching". We learn and reflect through each other while having the advantage of texts to guide us. It is a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental environment.

EFM is a four year study program through the School of Theology at the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee. We look at the Bible historically, literally, metaphorically, theologically, and "scientifically" (using science now known, we can apply dates, ascribe authorship, have political background, etc.). We refer back to historical things - which certainly set the pace - but also look at social and political ramifications. Consideration is directed at social justice movements that have impacted our world community.

Part of our class time is sharing what we have read that week, not a book report, but how the reading touched us in some way. The chapter lessons have a common theme that crosses the four-year study. Another part of our discussion is called "Theological Reflections" in which we discuss sometimes words, sometimes issues, sometimes concepts.

St. Margaret's EfM meets on Wednesdays from 9 am until 11:30 weekly September through May in the Formation Building.  Please contact Karen Engelke ( [email protected]  (410-562-3624) or Jim Hall ( [email protected]  (410-956-5120). The cost is $375 and includes all texts. Scholarship help is available. Students who have completed a year or more previously are encouraged to rejoin the program; or if you want to explore EfM through the new texts, you are very welcome.
