Dear St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School Families,

One thing I have learned as I get older is that life is about evolving.  Either we are creating change or we're adjusting to the planned or unplanned changes that come our way.  With this in mind, I have news to share with the school community about staffing changes that will take place next year.

Ms. Gillespie will be leaving after seven years at St. Francis.  During her tenure at St. Francis, Ms. Gillespie taught 6th and 7th grade, and was the technology teacher/coordinator.  In addition to her classroom duties, Ms. Gillespie served on a variety of committees, including Yearbook, Technology, and Alumni as well as supported several student activities, including the student talent show, Academic Decathlon coach, student council advisor, and co-director of the summer school program. When asked what she'll remember most about SFA, Ms. Gillespie commented. "The deep friendships made with several faculty members and the many laughs shared with my students.  We wish Ms. Gillespie the best as she pursues new opportunities and prepares to get married this summer.

Mr. Fernando will be leaving St. Francis after teaching 7th grade religion and 7th/8th grade math for the past eleven years. In addition to his classroom duties, Mr. Fernando supported school administrative initiatives, including integration of curriculum maps, preparing WASC/WCEA documents, and serving on the Technology Committee, as well as school activities, including Academic Decathlon head coach. His favorite memories are about the blessing of the animals, collaborating with the faculty, and the generosity of parents and students.  We wish Mr. Fernando the best as he pursues plans to teach at the college level and return to administration.

Mrs. Kridle has taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science at St. Francis for the past three years.  She will be leaving St. Francis to spend more time raising her four kids, two at St. Francis and two in high school.  Outside the classroom, Mrs. Kridle assisted with the garden club and Academic Decathlon. First joining the SFA community as a parent in 2004, Mrs. Kridle has served in a variety of volunteer roles, including the Spirit Committee, Auction Committee, and as a new parent mentor.  She leaves with fond memories of a generous faith based community where her family was loved and supported during very difficult times.

Mr. McKay will be leaving St. Francis to pursue a career in medicine and/or the military.  Although he was with us for only one year, Mr. McKay has had a very positive impact on our students.  Teaching K - 5th grade science, he made learning fun with interesting demonstrations and hands on activities.  In addition to his teaching duties, Mr. McKay assisted with the 8th grade retreat and helped coach the Academic Decathlon team. His favorite memories are about working with the kids and staff.  He is most proud of learning how to teach elementary students and managing the workload.  "Teaching is hard work but very rewarding."

Mary Ann Ringkamp is retiring to spend more time with her grandchildren and family. Mary Ann has been a part of St. Francis school since 2001, working as an instructional aide in the Kindergarten classroom.  She leaves with very fond memories of her kindergarten students. She appreciates the honesty, love, and joy they bring to each day.  Mary Ann is grateful for the peace, love and kindness she experienced at SFA. Having worked with Mary Ann for the past six years, I believe that our students are the fortunate ones!  Thank you Mary Ann for guiding and loving our young students!

Hunter Martelli will not return to St. Francis next year in order to continue her education and pursue a degree in Media Marketing and Management. Hunter has been working as an instructional aide in Ms. LeVay's first grade classroom for the past two years.  Hunter's favorite memories are about spending time with students, getting to experience their personalities, adventurous spirit, and natural curiosity about the world.
I know I speak for the entire school community when expressing our best wishes for a happy and productive life beyond St. Francis and express our sincere thanks for their dedicated service on behalf of our kids.

VOLUNTEER NEWS
Mentor Families Needed!
We are seeking Mentor Families in ALL grades to WELCOME new families to St. Francis of Assisi for the 2017-2018 school year. You don't need to possess an in-depth knowledge of everything about our school or have all the answers, just a willingness to share the warmth of our SFA community.

What does a Mentor Family do?
  • Email or phone your new SFAYL family in early August to welcome them and answer any questions they may have regarding uniforms, hot lunch program, carline, etc.
  • Invite your new family and attend the New Parent Wine and Cheese Social on Thursday, August 24.
  • Be available to answer questions as the school year goes on and make sure they know about upcoming events like Tricks, Treats and Tacos and Auction.
Our Mentor Families are important ambassadors to our school and truly represent the heart-and-soul of all that makes St. Francis special. We need loving, welcoming families to be part of this ministry. It's a fun and easy way to get volunteer hours credit as well. If you would like to be part of this special ministry, please visit signup.com or contact Lisa Bryson ([email protected]) or Lisa Fowler ([email protected]).
Volunteer Opportunities for 2017 - 2018!
Don't delay, sign up today! The SignUp.com link for Volunteer Opportunities for the 2017 - 2018 school year is now live on the SFA website  ( under Support SFA / Volunteer) .  It includes all of the school-wide volunteer positions available for the coming school year.  Get a jump start on those service hours and register today for the opportunity that works for you!  When the time is right, you will be contacted by the event chairperson to schedule your shifts. Please take a moment to check it out and sign up today!

Key positions taking place early in the school year and requiring attention include: morning carline monitors, being a mentor family, Kona Ice helpers, Fall fundraiser and Fall Fest volunteers. Want to make an immediate and lasting impact here at SFA? We are looking for key people to help Chair and oversee the following essential programs: Carline, Spring and Fall Book Fair, Fall Cookie Dough and Yankee Candle Fundraiser. Have questions or want to discuss the opportunities in more detail, please reach out to Tammy Clarida for assistance.

Classroom related opportunities will become available when classes are assigned in August.  Every SFA family is required to complete twenty (20) Volunteer Service Hours each year.  Families log their hours in the   Sycamore Parent Portal as they are completed. Volunteer Service Hours began accumulating on  April 1 for the 2017 - 2018 school year.
It's Car Line Recruitment Time!
Are you a morning person? (it's okay if you're not); Do you have a great wave?  Would you like to see a lot of smiling faces in the morning?  If you said yes to any of these questions, then come join the SFAYL Carline Crew.

We need to have our Carline Crew members in place before the end of the year.  We have several outgoing 8th grade parents that need to have their spots filled. Come joining the Carline Crew -- you won't regret it!

It's only 1 day a week (unless you'd like to do more) from 7:35 am - 8:05 am.  Bring your friends, make it a class challenge and have your grade work the same day. We need 40 people to fill all the spots to make the carline work most efficiently.  Training is provided, and volunteering for carline will get you 10 steps closer to Heaven!!!

If you would like to help out next year, please contact our new Carline Chairperson, Susan Katsaros at [email protected].
Join the Auction Committee!

The St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School Annual Auction Gala provides funding to supplement actual school tuition costs. Each year the Auction Committee raises funds to assist the school in special projects including updating school security, technology, music, and tuition assistance. Joining the committee is a great way to get to know fellow parents, make a valuable contribution to the school and have a lot of fun earning your volunteer hours!!

There are several positions available. If you are interested in becoming a member of the 2017/2018 Auction Committee, join us for an introductory meeting on Tuesday, June 6th at 6:30pm in the Seamus Glynn Center. If you cannot attend feel free to contact Michelle Manzella at 714-785-7823 or [email protected].
