Pentecost- Sunday,June 4th
(Wear Red, or White or Green)

And when the day of Pentecost, also known as Whitsun, was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
                                               Acts 2:1-2 KJV

Dear Friends in Christ,

According to the Book of the Apostles, on the 50th day of Easter known in the ancient Greek world as Pentecost, God sent his Holy Spirit upon the disciples.  They had gathered in prayer and thanksgiving wondering when God would send them a clear vision for the church.  On that Pentecost, God sent the Spirit and appeared upon their heads like tongues of fire.  This is the day we celebrate as the birth of the Christian Church and its mission to proclaim the good news to the whole world.

For a brief moment in time the apostles were united, and yet just as quickly they were wrestling with odd disagreements- including the appropriate liturgical color to celebrate the day.  In the Catholic world of the West, the bishops preferred red as a sign of the flames of the Holy Spirit. In the Anglican Communion, and much of the English speaking world, the color was white, hence the English name of Whitsun.  Since the church in Jerusalem celebrated 5,000 being baptized in one day, the Church of England continued to celebrate baptism on Whitsun with white baptismal robes.  In the Orthodox world of the East, leaders preferred the color green to mark the new beginning of the church as a plant growing on its own.  Five years ago when I was serving in Europe, I travelled to a Lutheran Church in northern Serbia.  There, all the traditions were celebrated together.  Green branches adorned the church, red flowers were placed on the altar and the Lutheran pastor wore white robe.

Regardless of the color, Pentecost celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit, and God's call to each new generation of the church to "dream dreams."  And the Holy Spirit enlightens and empowers us to proclaim this good news of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth.

Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

HALL OF FAITH
Worship this Summer- "Hall of Faith"

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Hebrews 11: 1

Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the Bible's "Hall of Faith." In this chapter, the writer of the book of Hebrews introduces an impressive list of heroic figures from the Old Testament.  Some of these Biblical heroes Bible are well-known personalities, while others remain anonymous.  In Hebrews 12, the writer goes on to say that these figures continue to encourage us as a "cloud of witnesses" who follow the Jesus the pioneer and perfector of the faith.

Throughout the summer, Pastor Haug will preach on the characters in the "Hall of Faith" and how their actions reflect faith in God.  The series will begin on Trinity Sunday, June 11th.

Reserve a month in 2017 to provide a meal for Our Saviour's Housing.  Our congregation provides the meal the first Friday of every month.  Cheri is especially in need of someone for the July 7th meal. If you are a Thrivent member, you can get a grant from them to help you cover costs.  After applying for the grant, it takes about 3+ weeks to get the funds so you do need to plan ahead.  Any questions on applying for the grant or to sign up contact Cheri Moe (952-431-5226 or [email protected]).

Thank you to Cathy Carlson and Peter van Bergen for serving the April 7th meal.
