Physical Education...Is a Racquet
Hillview physical education needs more tennis racquets for use in some of our popular games and activities (Tennis Baseball, Eclipse Ball, Tennis Cricket, etc.). If you happen to have an old or unused racquet in good condition, we'd love to have it. We'll take all sizes, so that junior racquet that your 8th grader out grew is perfect for us.  Start your spring cleaning early and drop them off at the Hillview office. Thank you!

Hillview CAASPP Testing May 7-11, 2018
California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, also known as the SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium), a state assessment, will be administered to all 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade students. Note these dates on your calendar and avoid scheduling appointments outside of school on those days.

Site Council Meeting
Tuesday, February 13, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m., at the TERC office to review the results of January parent and student Site Survey. All meetings are open to the public.

Site Council Seeks Parent Nominees to Serve 2-Year Term
Wednesday, March 1, applications due. The Hillview Site Council, consisting of the principal, staff, student representatives, and six elected parents, is the body responsible for developing and monitoring the School Site Plan. This plan specifies the goals and metrics that drive major decisions on academics, the school environment, social-emotional well-being, technology, and other significant areas related to the school including the annual school survey.

The Hillview Site Council has three open parent positions for the two-year term from March 2018 through June 2020. Applicants should have at least one child attending Hillview for the duration of the term. One of the positions is for a parent of a student who is an English learner. The council meets approximately once a month after school.

Submit your name, a brief description of your background, and reasons for wanting to serve on the council by Wednesday, March 1. You may nominate someone by submitting their name and why you nominated them. We will hold an election during the site council meeting on Tuesday, March 13, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. in the Hillview front office conference room. Candidates must be present at the meeting on March 13. All parents of current Hillview students or of incoming Hillview students for the 2018 - 2019 school year who are in attendance at the meeting are eligible to vote. New members should plan to participate in the Site Council meetings on March 13, April 17, May 8, and June 5. For more information and to submit your application, please contact Theanne Thomson here.

MPCSD Parent Education Speaker Series
"The Minds of Boys and Girls"
Wednesday, February 28, 2018, 6:30 p.m., Hillview Middle School PAC. MPCSD Parent Education Speaker Series continues its great line-up with another renowned author and speaker, Michael Gurian.

Dr. Michael Gurian
In this practical and humorous presentation, family counselor and New York Times bestselling author Michael Gurian focuses on helping boys and girls across the gender spectrum to succeed in school and life. Michael explores how the minds of boys and girls develop distinctly - and how parents, educators, and others can support the needs of our children. Michael traces how a child's learning mind grows, how the genders learn and grow differently, how acculturation influences boys and girls, and how crucial school success has become to life success. He brings to life not only the developmental science of girls' and boys' minds, but also practical methods you can use to educate and mentor.

Michael will be available to sign books following the event. Books will be available for purchase.  Light refreshments and beverages served. Childcare available for potty-trained children.  More information here

Music
Hillview Music goes to Disneyland!
As you read this, 96 Hillview musicians are getting ready to enjoy their last day in Disneyland. We arrived on Friday and have been involved in numerous performances and workshops. The Concert Band, Orchestra, and Choir all participated. Many thanks to all of the parents who supported our scholarship fundraising efforts and have volunteered to be chaperones. It couldn't have happened without you!

Congratulations!
Hillview students performed in the CMEA Bay Section Regional Honors Festival Concert. Each ensemble is made up of the top musicians nominated by their school's director.
  • Fatih Cropper and Ingrid Standifer - Chorus
  • Isabella Edylstein - Concert Band
  • Katherine Ahn, Andrew Ahn, and Lily Bacon - String Orchestra
A very, special congratulations to Conor Dunne. He was selected as a flautist in the California All-State Junior High School Band. Conor is only the third musician in Hillview's history to be selected to participate. He will be attending the CASMEC All-State Conference in San Jose and will be performing on Sunday, February 18.

There will be a bin for collection in the office. The vases will go to Random Acts of Kindness, who will send bouquets to local healthcare facilities.

After-School Sports
Basketball League
Final week of the season for 7th-grade girls!

Team Standings
Available here for 6th and 7th grades; 8th-grade standings are available from the team coach.

Missing Practices?
Many after-school basketball players have regularly missed practice and games without notifying their coach. Some players have just quit due to other activities. Giving up on one activity while starting another is pretty discouraging to players and coaches. Work with your team to do your best in following through on your commitment. Thank you for your cooperation.

Tennis Program
Registration closed Friday, February 9. There is a waiting list. We'll do the best we can to place you on a team.

The Tennis Program consists of three teams - one Varsity A level and two Varsity B level teams.
Varsity B level players that are less experienced may not play in matches, but will get to play matches in practice against other players of the same level. Tryouts are in late February to early March. Practice will begin immediately after teams are formed. Practices will be held Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Sunday sand some Fridays. Matches are on Wednesdays for home matches and vary for away matches. Matches run from the end of March through mid-May.

Upcoming Spring Sports
Track, Boys Volleyball, Drop-In Volleyball for girls (tentative), May Madness Basketball Clinic (tentative). Registration will be in February.
