SAPCC Advocates for Transportation

Pat Thompson from the Transportation Committee holds up a sign at the rally
SAPCC joined Transportation Forward at their transportation rally on May 22 to fight transportation funding cuts. Transportation Forward is a statewide campaign dedicated to building broad support for new investments in all modes of transportation in Minnesota. With infrastructure crumbling and demand rising for safe, accessible, and affordable transportation options, Transportation Forward continues to lead the fight for all modes of transportation, including: cars, bikes, pedestrian, buses, and light rail.

Throughout the legislative session, Transportation Forward has brought together groups across the state to visibly advocate for transportation. SAPCC has been proud to join that effort.

We will continue to take a stand in favor of adequately funding transportation in Minnesota. We support all modes of transportation and believe that fully funding multimodal transportation founds the strength of our economy and supports the livability and vitality of our neighborhood and beyond.

Mayfest Outreach a Success

We enjoyed co-hosting this year's Mayfest with the Hampden Park Co-op where we got to roll out citizen engagement for our ten year plan. A huge thank you to our fabulous volunteers who staffed our Mayfest table at the Hampden Park Co-op's annual plant sale extravaganza! This year was bigger than ever with performances by local musicians, a beer truck by the Urban Growler, snacks, plants, and more!

We kicked off our ten year comprehensive planning outreach process by asking neighbors about their likes and dislikes in the neighborhood and starting to get feedback on where to focus our efforts. We received many helpful comments and we're looking forward to getting more. You'll see members of the Council out and about in the neighborhood at places like the Art Festival and Fourth of July parade asking for your input and feedback about the neighborhood!

Do you have ideas about the ten year plan? Do you want to comment on what makes our neighborhood great or have ideas about things to change? Contact Cailin at cailin@sapcc.org.

Cailin's Farewell to the Community Council

As some of you may have heard, I will be transitioning out of my role at the St. Anthony Park Community Council in early June. It has been an honor to work for this organization and this community. I have been grateful to spend the last three years at an organization that puts equity and racial justice at the forefront of its work. I have appreciated the opportunities and challenges this role provided that pushed me to learn and grow. I proudly participated in the Council's work to transform land use planning in the neighborhood and our programming to advance food justice in under-served parts of the community, among many other efforts.

I have accepted a strategic and PR consulting position but will remain active in the neighborhood. I will stay on the Jennings School Board, the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization Board, and the Towerside Board on behalf of this community and St. Paul more broadly. Please feel free to reach out to me if I can be of assistance to you through my LinkedIn profile.
In the meantime, we will need someone to fill my role! If you know of anyone who might be a good fit for the Council, please get in touch with Suyapa at suyapa@sapcc.org.

Como Park Ninth Graders Publish Book

For six months this school year, 42 ninth grade students from Como Park Senior High worked in the classroom to write a professionally published book. Titled Adventures Within Another: Stories of Identity and Culture from Como Park High School, their anthology spotlights the next generation of writers whose poetry and prose explore the people, places, and things shaping their personal and cultural identities.

These students are the authors of the 2016-2017 Young Authors Book Project, an annual program organized by local nonprofit Mid-Continent Oceanographic Institute (MOI). This is MOI's second published book through their annual Young Authors' Book Project. Each year, the project travels to a different school and age group of students in the Twin Cities metro. MOI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their writing skills and homework, emphasizing cross-curricular creativity.

Come celebrate the public release of Adventures Within Another with student readings and refreshments on June 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Moonpalace Books (2820 E 33rd St, Minneapolis). Copies of the book can be purchased at the reading or pre-ordered at MOI's online store.

Pelham Blvd. Bikeway Public Hearing

June 7, 2017

5:30 pm
City Hall and Courthouse
15 W. Kellogg Blvd.
City Council Chambers - 3rd Floor
St. Paul, MN 55102

City Council will hold a public hearing regarding proposed implementation of bicycle facilities on Pelham Boulevard, Myrtle Avenue, and Raymond Avenue. you are invited to attend and provide testimony in favor of, or in opposition to, the proposed project.

If you cannot attend the public hearing, you can email comments to ward4@ci.stpaul.mn.us to have them included in the public record.

Major Project Changes
At the January Open House, city staff communicated that on-street parking would be removed from both sides of Myrtle between Pelham Boulevard and Raymond Avenue to provide space for the protected bike lane. We heard from numerous sources that on-street parking in this location was a valued asset. In response to this feedback, city staff is now recommending that Myrtle Avenue become a one-way westbound street for motorists, while still allowing two-way traffic for bicycles in the designated bike lanes. By eliminating eastbound motorized traffic from the street, the existing on-street parking will remain in place on the north side of the street. This change preserves 21 on-street parking spaces previously proposed to be removed. Motorized traffic currently moving eastbound on Myrtle Avenue will make that eastbound movement on Wabash Avenue or using a combination of Franklin Avenue and University Avenue. A Summary of Engineering Recommendations for the project is available on the project website. The summary details the proposed changes, including the construction of the bicycle facilities, safety improvements, and parking impacts. This document can be found on the project website at www.stpaul.gov/pelham-bikeway.
