Our latest guest is Rep. Antonio F. D. "Tony" Cabral, representing the 13th Bristol District in the Massachusetts state legislature, who emigrated from the island of Pico in the Azores with his parents at the age of 14. His district, which encompasses the city of New Bedford, claims 37% Portuguese ancestry. During the interview, Rep. Cabral talks about the importance of dialogues with the Azorean government and how they are beneficial to both sides and also about how much more involved the Portuguese-American community has become in his district. His call for action is for Portuguese-Americans to become more involved at the local level and the need for young people to actively participate in their communities. https://soundcloud.com/paliticus/paliticus-011-rep-tony-cabral

CAMÕES, I.P. and AMERICAN Councils for INTERNATIONAL Education (AC) sign a Memorandum that promotes the accreditation of the Portuguese language at the level of secondary education and access to higher ed
ucation in the US
A Memorandum of Understanding between Camões, I.P. and the American Councils for International Education (AC) was signed in January, 2018, with the purpose of dedicating and promoting the accreditation of the Portuguese language in the "National Examinations in World Languages " (NEWL). The agreement will contribute to valuing knowledge in the Portuguese language and guarantees the validation of credits in secondary education and also in access to higher education in the United States.
The two entities have agreed to cooperate and collaborate in various areas, notably in joint education, research and training objectives that benefit the missions of both organizations with regard to the study and teaching of Portuguese language and culture.
AC and Camões, I.P. will work together to strengthen public awareness of the educational programs and activities of both organizations, including the National Examination of Foreign Languages (NEWL ®), in Portuguese and in other languages offered by NEWL, if and where applicable, for example, in the recognition of the results of NEWL exams by affiliated colleges or universities
