Move into Movember with Yoga by Mike Martin

In support of men's health, KYH held a Movember Charity Foundation "men's only" event on Saturday, November 17th. Thirteen men attended the one- hour class led by our teacher Krisna "Chris" Zawaduk. Happily for us, Krisna chose asanas with (slightly) more focus on strength over flexibility. What struck me most about the class was the vibe; someone described it as "heavily laced with testosterone." Throughout the class there were grunts, groans and plenty of laughter.  I had a tough time keeping it together whenever I looked up at "Chris" with her painted on mustache.

For some attendees, the best part of the day occurred after class when we adjourned to the Train Station Pub for "wings and beer" with our wives and friends. Train Station staff gave us our own section, special happy hour pricing and treated us very well . All 25 of us had a great time socializing, hoisting back brewskies and eating appetizers.  In addition to the good times, we donated over $200 to the Movember Foundation. This successful KYH event is one we all will look forward to attending next year!

Multiple Perspectives by Melissa Perehudoff

In preparing for the free class for all members prior to the KYH AGM, I started thinking about the composition of a volunteer board. Each person represents a unique personality and perspective when discussing issues at a board meeting.  The multiple perspectives on the board are like the facets of a diamond adding lustre of knowledge to the decision making process.  These multiple minds work together towards the one purpose of establishing and maintaining an Iyengar yoga center.  When intelligence flows evenly through an organization or body, balance and beauty are created.  That led me to thinking about the L shape in asana and how various poses are different perspectives of the L shape.  Can you identify the eight L shape poses in the practice sequence below?  (Hint:  some poses represent an exact L shape and some poses have an L shape embedded in their geometry.)

1.  Utkatasana 2 X's
2.  Adho Mukha Svanasana-heels to wall
3.  Utthita Hasta Padangustasana-feet on wall, use belt
4.  Ardha Uttanasana-hands on wall
5.  Virabhadrasana III-hands on wall
6.  Virabhadrasana III-raised foot on wall and hands on vertical bricks
7.  Uttanasana
8.  Ardha Adho Mukha Vrksasana-feet on wall
9.  Surya Namaskar
10.  Surya Namaskar-add standing poses VI, VIII & Utthita Hasta Padangustasana or Vrksasana
11.  Dandasana
12.  Urdhva Prasarita Padasana
13.  Halasana with feet at wall into
14.  Sarvangasana
15.  Viparita Karani
16.  Savasana
