Mr. Justin Johnson Awarded Varsity Brands 2017 National Top Notch Teacher!

Congratulations to St. Vincent's Academy's Mr. Justin Johnson who was awarded Varsity Brand's 2017 National Top Notch Teacher Award! This award was given to one teacher nationally who "understands that achievement means more than a number in a gradebook. It means helping students discover their strengths and passions. Students feel this teacher cares about them both academically and personally and has a genuine love and loyalty for his school and supports it in every way possible." Mr. Johnson was awarded a trip to Disney World where his award was announced from 5 finalists. . . how exciting! We are so lucky to have Mr. Johnson at St. Vincent's Academy!

Mrs. Mary Anne Hogan Voted Best Principal

The readers of Connect Savannah have voted Mrs. Mary Anne Hogan, as winner of the 2017 Best Principal Award! This is her 7th consecutive year receiving the award during her leadership at SVA. The school is so proud and grateful to have her guidance . Mrs. Hogan stated that, "It is my privilege to serve the students, parents, faculty and staff of St. Vincent's Academy. The students push me to be the best that I can be every day. I love them like they're my own. Every day is full of surprises and blessings. I could not do what I do without the prayers, support, and love of the Sisters of Mercy. I look forward to what God has in store for St. Vincent's Academy in years to come."

Spotlight on SVA Staff: Sherry Poston

Way back in the dark ages, I attended The Ohio State University, which most everyone born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, does at some point or another during their lifetime. I took a "sabbatical" from college for about ten years to have my two wonderful children, Margaret Poston Northup (now 40-something) and J.D. Poston (now 30-something). As I was heading back to college, when my son was around five, I found Ohio Dominican University, also in Columbus. Ohio Dominican was one of the first colleges or universities in the area who developed programs and classes that specifically nurtured those of us who were now called "Non-Traditional Students." Adults, some returned from Vietnam and the Gulf War, who had families and jobs and could not attend classes during the day still wanted and needed a good college education. It was a beautiful little school run by the Dominican Order. We had both priests and nuns as our professors and a few lay instructors as well. I loved it. It took me eight years to finish my last "two" by going nights and weekends, but eventually I graduated with a BA and a major in Library Science. After graduation, I became a working Mom and had an exciting career as a law librarian for some of the biggest and best law firms in the downtown Columbus area. However, eventually, all law firms, large and small alike, began down-sizing their on-site libraries and library staff, so I could see it was time for a career change. However, there is always a silver lining! In my case, it was Wendy's Corporate Headquarters, in Dublin, Ohio. I was assistant to the Senior Vice President for Corporate and Government Affairs until my retirement in 2012. As my retirement was fast approaching, yet another door opened as my daughter and son-in-law encouraged me to retire to Savannah. I arrived October 21, 2012, and have been able to count my many blessings every day. I live in the same city as my first two wonderful grandchildren (Ellie and Anders Northup) and surprisingly, in June my son and his wife and my brand new grandbaby (Madeleine Reese Poston) moved to Suwanee, GA. Never in a million years did I ever expect to have all my family so close again and, surprise! All south of the Mason-Dixon Line! But, the absolute best part of this latest transition in my life is that I found St. Vincent's Academy and the wonderful staff and students here. Life couldn't get any better!!!

Senior Celebrations

Seniors enjoyed so many special and unique events at the end of the school year!  Some of their favorites were the Senior Luncheon held at the Golf Club, the beautiful Baccalaureate Mass held at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, and the Senior Peanut Party!  We would like to especially thank Bobby Chu and Mola Chu Jung '56 for their kindness and generosity in donating the Boiled Peanut Party and fabulous swag bags in memory of Mola's daughter, Monica Jung '82.
