I’ve been thinking and writing about what the Christine Center is and what it offers the people who come here. Yes, we offer sanctuary—a place of spiritual restoration in a world that too often assaults our sense of inner peace—and we offer a beacon of compassion guiding us toward new lives and a new world. We offer the both rest and work.
I’d like to go by climbing a birch tree,
And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk
Toward heaven, till the tree could bear no more,
But dipped its top and set me down again (--Robert Frost, “Birches”)
Our spirits can reach heavenward,
because
our feet never leave the ground. Early on, I heard Sister Gabriele describe the center as “a woodland sanctuary offering spiritual deepening to all,” and it rang as truly beautiful as beautifully true. I use it daily as a reminder of what the Christine Center is all about: By offering the sanctuary for spiritual deepening we are transforming the world.
There is another answer to “What is this place?” It is my
sacred cause
, and you’re invited to join me. Can the world be changed one prayer, one meditation, one conversation, or one act of love at a time? I believe it’s the only way it can be. “Earth’s the right place for love,” and we’re here now so let’s get started.

Writing to Wake the Soul: When Memory and Imagination Meet
March 21-25 (Wednesday-Sunday)
with author Karen Hering
Tuition: $220 before February 21; $270 after, plus meals and lodging
Discover the creative energy and hope that rise when memory and imagination meet in your writing. Whether we write for our own eyes only or for other readers (and whether our words are fiction, memoir, poetry or otherwise), writing invites us to unwrap the gifts of both memory and imagination, seeing not only what has been and is now, but also the extraordinary possibilities of what might still come to pass with our creative engagement.
Karen Hering, author of
Writing to Wake the Soul: Opening the Sacred Conversation Within,
will lead this writing retreat for both experienced and emerging writers. The retreat includes: personal time for your own writing projects; optional daily guided writing sessions on the theme of memory and imagination; gentle qigong or tai chi to listen to your body; and daily circles and community meals for creative exchange with writing friends, new and old.
Together, we’ll share the gifts and challenges of the writing life, supported by the Christine Center’s generous hospitality, delicious and nourishing meals, peaceful natural setting, and opportunities for silent meditation and spiritual direction or unleashing creativity in the arts studio.
Individual consultations with Karen can also be scheduled in advance (and for an additional fee) to share the spiritual journey of your writing or to discuss your writing process or projects, with or without a writing sample.
