After the distribution of several short messages over the past months, it is a pleasure to present you with the Summer 2017 issue of GHI Matters. I take this opportunity to inform you of our intention to organise the 1st GHI Congress , to take place in The Netherlands in Spring 2019. The aim of the congress is to wake up the world to the proven scientific evidence about assessing and controlling food safety that has been accumulated over the past three decades.

It seems unbelievable that data generated at enormous costs to society remain largely ignored by those who decide on regulations. The problem seems to be that scientists talk with each other but fail to communicate clearly with those who make the decisions, including everybody from politicians to the general public. If we do not bridge the gap, little will happen and people will not benefit from the knowledge generated.

The aim of the GHI Congress is to start bridging the gap by addressing politicians, CEOs, journalists and indeed the general public in a clear, understandable way. Please keep an eye on the GHI website,
www.globalharmonization.net , for more information on this important event. Also, we welcome your suggestions to help make the congress a success.

Based on the principles of GHI, Ensuring Global Food Safety: Exploring Global Harmonization offers a rational and multi-faceted approach to current food safety issues, while arguing that a science-based global regulatory framework will enhance the safety, availability and quality of the food supply worldwide.

GHI was specifically established to help build global consensus on the scientific evidence underpinning food safety policymaking. This book provides practical examples in key areas such as microbiology, toxicology and nutrition, as well as discusses possible improvements necessary to sustain the integrity of the global food supply in the 21st century. Member News & Notes

GHI Working Group chair Jaap Hanekamp has co-authored with Aalt Bast the just-published book, Toxicology: What Everyone Should Know. This essential reference describes important discoveries in toxicology through the ages, explores their historical and sociological impacts, and shows how they still influence recent, state-of-the-art developments.

In addition, the book shows how these developments are extrapolated into public and political perceptions on risks and the regulatory consequences, emphasizing environmental issues, such as manmade and natural chemicals, their interaction and impact, nutrition and drugs. Many chapters in this book contain overviews on superfood and functional food from South America. Details on the functional properties of apiculture products are also included, as well as an area that is not widely discussed in academia - pet food with functional properties.
Chapters can be downloaded individually from the InTech webpage...
