The pace of life across the Island quickens in June, and the Edgartown Library is no exception. As you can read below, we're offering a variety of public programs this month -- and the calendar will be packed still fuller in July and August.
But even as the Vineyard enters its most hectic season, we promise you places of respite here at the library. Our new building is filled with quiet nooks for reading and study, and even in the peak of summer you'll find a parking spot in the roomy lot behind the library.
So come for the programs and good fellowship, or come to get away from the crush of summer: either way, we always look forward to seeing you here.

Environmental Politics:
Mass Audubon Director of Public Policy Speaks
At the Library at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 1
Jack Clarke, Mass Audubon's Director of Public Policy, will discuss how current events in Washington are affecting climate change, energy, and environmental policy and how Mass Audubon is addressing it at a local, state, and federal level.

Author Thomas Dresser Speaks

Celebrated local historian Thomas Dresser reads from his latest book, Hidden History of Martha's Vineyard, in a free 7 p.m. program on Tuesday, June 6.
Behind the mansions and presidential vacations of Martha's Vineyard hide the lost stories, mysteries, and forgotten events of a small island. What was the Island's role in the Underground Railroad? Why do chickens festoon Nancy Luce's grave? How did Vineyarders react in 1923 when the island's supply of liquor was deep-sixed in a shipwreck? Delve below the surface of history to discover the origin and meaning of local place names and the significance of beloved landmarks.
The evening is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served.

Stranger in a Strange Land:
Eight-Week Film Series Begins Wednesday, June 7
In May, the Edgartown Library completed a project of tuning the acoustics in our program room. This June, we're celebrating with the first four films in a Wednesday series entitled "Stranger in a Strange Land." Here's the lineup:
Wednesday, June 7, 7 p.m.
Aguirre, the Wrath of God
Our series begins with Werner Herzog's masterpiece, starring Klaus Kinski. Set in Peru in 1650, the story of an expedition by Spanish conquistadors makes a haunting and riveting film that transcends the epic genre (Germany, 1972). This screening is for adults only.
Wednesday, June 14, 7 p.m.
Brooklyn
Brooklyn
tells the story of a young Irish immigrant in the 1950s, beautifully played by Saoirse Ronan, navigating her way through that very strange and exotic land (US, 2015).
Wednesday, June 21, 7 p.m.
The Third Man
This classic thriller, about a bewildered Yankee trying to decipher the mysteries of post-WWII Vienna, stars Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli, and a very elusive Orson Welles. Carol Reed deftly directs the Graham Greene story, and the zither music is still fabulous (UK, 1949).

Dheepan
Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, this new film from acclaimed director Jacques Audiard is a gripping, human tale of an immigrant's survival in Europe (France, 2016).

Birdwatching Walk Begins from the Library
At 3 p.m. Saturday, June 10
It's nesting time on the Vineyard, and ecologist Robert Culbert will lead a lucky group of birding enthusiasts on an afternoon birdwatching excursion beginning at the library. This program for adults is free, but space is limited and registration is required. Please call the library at 508-627-4221 to sign up or for more information.

Opera Club Presents
The Pearl Fishers

The Metropolitan Opera's acclaimed new production of Bizet's The Pearl Fishers (Les Pêcheurs de Perles) was filmed live in HD in 2016. Conducted by Gianandrea Noseda and directed by Penny Woolcock, Bizet's sweeping romance tells the story of a beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand. Diana Damrau leads the cast as the priestess Leïla, opposite Matthew Polenzani as Nadir, Mariusz Kwiecien as Zurga, and Nicolas Testé as the high priest Nourabad.
All adults are welcome. Please note that Opera Club screenings will be presented on Sunday through September.

Clara Kisco will speak about her walk through Spain on one of the several "Caminos" that lead to Santiago de Compostela.

The Future of Bats on Martha's Vineyard: Naturalists
Present Program at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20
BiodiversityWorks biologists Luanne Johnson and Liz Baldwin will share findings from their research on the Vineyard's population of Northern Long-eared Bats. These bats are threatened with extinction due to White Nose Syndrome, caused by a fungus introduced to New England in 2006.
Join us to learn about bats and their behavior, the syndrome killing bats, the status of our bat populations, and how you can help save our bats.

Martha's Vineyard Spirituals Choir Returns to Library
For 3 p.m. Concert on Saturday, June 24
Join us for an afternoon of inspiration, fun, and education. Led by Jim Thomas, founder and president of the organization, the Spirituals Choir returns to the Edgartown Library to start their season of song. All are welcome to this free performance.
The U.S. Slave Song Project (USSSP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public about authentic U.S. slave songs. U.S. slave songs, also known as Negro spirituals, are true American folk music. They were sung by slaves between 1619 and 1865, when the last slaves were freed.
