Illustration from the fairy tale, "The Frog Prince"

A couple of years ago, a woman from Missouri who participated in the Global Earth Exchange wrote us: "I really didn't want to do this. I mean, why would you go to a place that was damaged? Wouldn't that be depressing? But I went anyway, because my friend was so enthusiastic about it. And it was wonderful to share with others what we loved about that place and to discover life thriving there in all kinds of surprising ways. After we made our RadJoy bird, I realized I'd come for my friend, but I'd stayed for this place."

Something miraculous occurs when we dare to give attention and love to what's been hurt-in ourselves, in other people, and in places. Through the action of caring, what's broken becomes whole and beautiful. The miracle happens again and again in fairy tales: the girl kisses the frog, the shaman lays out a dead woman's bones and carefully arranges them aright, the good daughter offers water to the toothless old woman she meets at the well. Through this act of generosity, not only is the ugly itself transformed, but the giver of the beauty also undergoes a change.

Join the world this Saturday, June 17 for our annual Global Earth Exchange . Fall in love with a hurt place that shines again with beauty that you yourself have made for it!
