June 10, 2017 - According to data from the National Institute of Mental Health, some 38 percent of girls ages 13 through 17, and 26 percent of boys, suffer from an anxiety disorder. Marshall McLuhan famously wrote, a cool medium. Our devices are literally hot, warming our laps and our palms."In our always-on culture, checking your phone is the last thing you do before you go to sleep, and the first thing you do if you wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom," Mr. Harris said. "Just today, I got an alert on my phone about the collapsing Arctic ice shelf. That's scary as hell." Push notifications. Apocalyptic headlines. Rancorous tweets. Countless studies have found links between online culture and anxiety. But if social media can lead to anxiety, it also might help relieve it.

Former Federal Prosecutor: Drug addiction & overdose - moral crisis
June 7, 2017 - Justin Fairfax and John Bell Fairfax, a former federal prosecutor, is one of three candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor in the June 13 primary ... In the past, treating drug use as a criminal offense led to mass incarceration, a prison industrial complex, and a three strikes policy that has negatively impacted families in the worst way possible. Our criminal justice system does not offered addicts the help they need to break free of addiction and has, in turn, exacerbated an already awful situation. People struggling with drug addictions need help and treatment, not a jail cell ... The tests of a moral society is how we treat the least of society. With the threats coming from Washington, it will be imperative to have advocates at every level of government to ensure that we keep moving forward.

Experiencing withdrawal from any drug is an uncomfortable and, at times, frightening experience to undergo alone. For many addicts, the initial withdrawal from a substance can lead to an immediate relapse because of the distressing symptoms that arise. With the help of a medical detox center, however, the process of withdrawal is safe and relatively easy thanks to the round-the-clock monitoring and appropriate administration of specific medications to make the patient as comfortable as possible.
