Asked earlier this year whether Indiana lawmakers knew about his lobbying for Alkermes, McCaffrey said, "I imagine some do and some don't." But several lawmakers who have worked closely with McCaffrey, including Davisson, say they were not aware.

Too Many Deaths Hurt Bottom Line?
June 8, 2017 - The Food and Drug Administration requested Thursday that the drugmaker Endo Pharmaceuticals stop selling Opana ER - its extended-release version of Opana. The FDA says the move marks the first time the agency has taken steps to remove an opioid from the market because of "public health consequences of abuse." An increasing number of people are abusing the powerful prescription pills by crushing, dissolving and injecting them. The sharing of needles by drug users has fueled an outbreak of other infectious diseases - HIV, hepatitis C and another blood disorder.

June 6, 2017 - The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) researchers announced Tuesday a breakthrough in the development of an anti-heroin vaccine. Researchers working at Virginia Commonwealth University said the anti-heroin vaccine has proven effective in blocking the "high" of heroin in non-human primates. The vaccine is now the first of its kind to pass this stage of preclinical testing.

"Every time I tried to come down on the pain pills, I needed another surgery, so I was hooked," said a 63-year-old female patient, who asked ABC15 not to use her name. June 7, 2017 - Justin Fairfax and John Bell Fairfax, a former federal prosecutor, is one of three candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor in the June 13 primary ... In the past, treating drug use as a criminal offense led to mass incarceration, a prison industrial complex, and a three strikes policy that has negatively impacted families in the worst way possible. Our criminal justice system does not offered addicts the help they need to break free of addiction and has, in turn, exacerbated an already awful situation. People struggling with drug addictions need help and treatment, not a jail cell ... The tests of a moral society is how we treat the least of society. With the threats coming from Washington, it will be imperative to have advocates at every level of government to ensure that we keep moving forward.

A Little Goes A Long Way
Heavy drinking can lead to a number of serious health problems, including increased risk of cancer, heart disease, and dementia, but consuming even moderate levels of alcohol could be dangerous, as well, new research suggests ... Furthermore, people drinking more than seven units of alcohol per week experienced a faster decline in language fluency over the study compared to those who abstained from alcohol. The authors adjusted for several factors that could have influenced the results, including age, sex, education, social class, physical and social activity, smoking, stroke risk and medical history.

Promises a Full Recovery
June 2, 2017 - Officials from Philadelphia's public behavioral health system showcased a new treatment center for opioid addiction Thursday that they say is a model for future programs in the city. Pathways to Recovery, which is located in Kensington and launched in October last year, serves people addicted to opioids who also have a co-occurring mental health condition. The program fills a gap in Philadelphia's treatment network, which didn't previously have a center that provides a level of care between hospitalization and outpatient treatment.

June 2, 2017 - The school is based on the treatment model for adolescent substance abuse and is a member of the Association of Recovery Schools. To be accepted into the program, students must have at least 30 days of sobriety and be between the ages of 14 and 20. Students must be committed to following the 12 Steps. The school recommends that students stay at the school for a year. Credits from the school are transferable to traditional public or private high schools.

June 8, 2017 - More than 2,000 people died of drug and alcohol overdoses in Maryland last year, an increase of 66 percent over 2015. Calling the deaths a "grim tide," Health and Mental Hygiene Secretary Dennis Schrader said in a statement Thursday that the statistics represent the largest single-year increase ever recorded in Maryland ... Eighty-nine percent of all intoxication deaths were opioid-related. Opioids include heroin, prescription opioids, and nonpharmaceutical fentanyl.

June 9, 2017 - Horn was one of three men from three different walks of life who pushed the idea before the school district and the city.
