President's Message:

Welcome  to the 33rd issue of the CFA Society of Pittsburgh's Newsletter .

Hope February is off to a great start for each of you!  A couple of headliner events take place this month that you don't want to miss!

On February 13th, our annual Research Challenge competition will take place!  Each of you should have received an EventBrite invitation to watch our teams compete for a chance to advance to the Americas competition in Boston March 19-20.  Teams will be presenting their valuation recommendation on Wesco. A total of 10 teams attended the kick-off event in October - and four teams made it through the rigorous process of submitting their final draft in order to be eligible to compete in the final presentations.  Come out and watch as Duquesne University, Penn State Behrend, Robert Morris University, and the University of Pittsburgh compete for our Society championship!  A big thanks to Josh Armstrong and the many volunteers who make this event possible!

The Stock Picker's Luncheon on February 14th is one of our most fun and exciting luncheons!  Come out and see your colleagues lay out their predictions for the upcoming year!

Lisa Brignoni has highlighted recent events - and some exciting future luncheons forthcoming!  The primary goals of the newsletter are to keep members and supporters of the Pittsburgh Society informed about the society's activities and foster greater community involvement by all members.

Highlights from Recent Events

January Luncheon with Meredith Jones

Thank you to all who joined us for this luncheon where Meredith Jones shared many insights on why hiring more women in our industry can result in better outcomes.

As some of you are aware, women in investment management is an initiative of the CFA Institute to attract and retain more women in our industry. The CFA Society of Pittsburgh is supporting this initiative through events like this one.

If you'd like to get more involved with this initiative, please reach out to Lisa Brignoni.
CFA Society Pittsburgh 4th annual Collegiate Financial Plan Competition

It has been a busy start to the year for the Society's financial literacy committee. As we read this newsletter, hundreds of our regions college students are in the process of creating personal financial plans. These plans are intended to serve as a road map for the financial choices that each of these students will be faced with upon graduation. Each year of the competition has seen an increase in both the number of participating schools and the number of entries. We are anticipating and preparing for participation from 20 schools and close to 300 students this spring.  The deadline for entries is March 19th, and winners will be announced in the April newsletter.

All participating students receive a Certificate of Achievement from the society in recognition of their efforts. The top plans from each school are then submitted into the prize round in which the Top Ten plans are recognized and awarded.

Thank you to the sub-committee that drives this effort and the success it has had:

Al Trezza (Co-Chair),    Susan Middleton (Co-Chair),  Darren Wilson (Co-Chair), Mark Luttringer, Barb Happel, John O'Toole, Alex Meles, Philip Bartels, Kendall Hill, Eric Fencil, Zak Klensch, Drew Haley, Eric Harlovic, Shane Nikolich, Jing Xie, Brian Taylor, Gene Natali, Reed Natali, Dave Immonen, Eric Velasco
