Chula Vista, San Diego Residents Win Top Prizes in Live WaterSmart Photo Contest

The Water Authority on June 8 announced the winners of its first photo contest hosted on Instagram. The Water Authority held the Live WaterSmart Photo Contest in May to celebrate Water Awareness Month and encouraged residents to submit photos and captions that explain what water means to them.

More than 80 photos were submitted, and the top four submissions won prizes donated by contest sponsors -- Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines, SeaWorld San Diego, Balboa Park Cultural Partnership and The Cravory.

The first grand prize winner, Candace Chu of San Diego, received the most "likes" on her photo taken at Cabrillo National Monument.

A judging panel selected additional winners based on originality, composition and connection to the contest theme. Genevieve Fong of Chula Vista was selected as the second grand prize winner. Sandra Carlson of San Diego and Abby Wattierrez of Encinitas were selected as the two runners-up.

The Sacramento Bee published an opinion article by Ellen Hanak, director of the Public Policy Institute of California's Water Policy Center, and David Mitchell, co-founder and principal at M.Cubed, about the state's unprecedented water-use reduction mandate during the 2012-2016 drought.

"It didn't reflect how well prepared most urban suppliers were, or their willingness to further reduce water use when needed," the article said. "It generated discord, and it muddied state and local roles and responsibilities."
