Welcome to our first Good Beginnings of Sullivan County monthly enewsletter.  You are receiving this email because you may know someone who works or volunteers at Good Beginnings. In this publication we will share news of our agency and issues that we face daily. We provide needed encouragement, education and support as families seek to raise their newborns.  We are here to help women struggling to maintain custody of their children or families simply wanting a little encouragement as they become new parents for the first time.  We teach about a child's development from before they are born until they are three years old.  Home visits are the method we use to work with families, but we are so much more than that.  T hrough our SHINE program, w e help teenage girls learn about their reproductive health and responsibility.  I n our We Can! program, parents and c hildren learn about proper diet and exercise, so that they have a better chance of avoiding some of the diseases like diabetes that are plaguing our nation.

We Welcome New  Executive Director Maggie Monroe-Cassel
Maggie started as our new Executive Director following Ellie Tsetsi's retirement.  She most recently served as ED for Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts. Most of her career, including 25 years in parish ministry, included work with Habitat for  Hum anity.  "I find that the mission of Habitat to help families help themselves is very
similar to our mission here at Good Beginnings.  We teach families the tools they need to  be stronger and healthier and create a brighter future for their children.  I am thrilled to be here and thankful to the board and the staff for their warm and helpful welcome."

Maggie was born in central New York and spent most of her career in New York State.  Before moving to Massachusetts, she was with Habitat in Santa Fe, NM. She and her husband
John decided last fall to move to Vermont to be closer to their only child, Chelsea, and her new husband, Brent.

Visit Second Beginnings, our gently used children's clothing store supporting our mission.  109 Pleasant St, Claremont, NH. Tues-Sat, 10-4.

The Effects of Poverty on Children

A sheriff and a doctor, both women, team up to study the effects of poverty on health.  Click here  to read a thought-provoking article.   The research shows that kids who have tough childhoods - because of poverty, abuse, neglect or witnessing domestic violence, for instance - are actually more likely to be sick when they grow up.  Of course, we know this in our hearts but it is interesting to read a scientific study of it.

The Cost of Child Abuse

Did you know that the approximate cost to the United States each year due to child abuse and neglect is $124,000,000,000?

Yes, $124 BILLION. Read more about these startling statistics to understand why supporting agencies like Good Beginnings of Sullivan County is so crucial to our region and the country.  Click here for more information.

So we hope that you have enjoyed receiving this enewsletter. Again, please help us out by passing it along to your friends who are also concerned about children and families.

Sincerely,

Maggie Monroe-Cassel
