Day Of Service Recognizes Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy

When Albert B. Kelly made plans for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 15 in Bridgeton, he thought he might get about 50 to attend. It turned out to be more than 200.
"I was very surprised by turnout," said Kelly, Gateway's President and CEO and Mayor of Bridgeton. "To have have over 200, that makes me very happy. A lot of different people from all walks of life in our community came out to help. People from a lot of different houses of worship. People of all ages. It makes me feel good that this is happening in our community."
A diverse group representing entities that included the New Jersey State Police, Bridgeton Police Department, the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office, local elected officials, several area churches and the community in general helped clean Code Blue warming centers and make sandwiches for Code Blue guests as a way of recognizing the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
After the work was done, many gathered at the Marino Center to listen to a recording of Dr. King's "If I had sneezed" speech and presentations by others in the community. A hearty lunch was served.
Among the tasks people worked together to complete was the cleaning of the facility at Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church used for Code Blue. The volunteers went to work on the floors, doors, walls, windows and kitchen.
"I had people tell me they had a wonderful day of service and that they really enjoyed it," Kelly said. "The pastor at Saint Andrew's (Pastor Ellen Rutherford) was very pleased with what we did there. It has constant use. I am happy we were able to help her out."

Foster Grandparent Program Off To A Great Start In Atlantic County

By Natalia Uribe
Foster Grandparent Program Director

I am very excited to announce that we have launched the Foster Grandparent Program in Atlantic County. We held the 4-day pre-service orientation from December 12 thru 15 at our new Gateway Head Start Early Education Center in Atlantic City. The center serves Head Start and Early Head Start children and families.
We had a total turnout of 40 volunteers that completed their pre-service training, which is a requirement in the program before beginning the volunteer service. The pre-service training consisted of an introduction to the agency, policies and procedures of the program, and overview of tips to aid the children in the classroom: literacy, self-help skills, child development, with help provided from our HS Education Manager, Lucy Barrios.
On day three they were able to get a hands on experience in the classroom and at the end of the day we had open class discussions. On day four we completed the training by bringing a representative from one of our agency's insurance companies, USI Insurance, who was able to give health and safety training to the volunteers.
Shelly Mihalecz and Misty Sheppard from our Head Start management teams also provided training to the volunteers on health and nutrition topics in the classroom. Fonda Wynn from Wynn Development & Consulting was also invited and had the volunteers engage in team building activities, which they greatly enjoyed.
To finalize, we had a guest speaker, Reverend Eric McCoy, who is the Atlantic City Police Department Chaplain. Rev. McCoy shared some words of wisdom before the graduation ceremony.
We still have more volunteers to come on board in the near future, as we are stipulated to have a total of 87 volunteers. Currently we have placements in the following sites: GHSEEC, Ventnor, Pleasantville, Galloway, Linwood, ACCC I, ACCC II, and Hammonton Head Start centers.
The volunteers were all very excited to start serving again. The majority of our volunteers have been part of the Senior Corps- Foster Grandparent Program for many years under different grantees. The children and staff have also expressed their excitement in the return of the program.
The volunteers are essential in the lives of our children. I want to express my gratitude to Tauheedah Abdullah,  Lucy Barrios, Kelli Best, Bonnie Eggenburg, Jessica Fleming, Maria Gomez, Shelly Mihalecz, Misty Sheppard, and Juan Uribe for their support and help during the orientation, they made it all possible. I am eager to see the great success and progress of the program.
