Better Late than Never - to Become a Priest
This is the third in a series o
n our latest ordinations and installations.

Unlike our last two recently ordained priests, the Rev. Mark Ragon Parker was raised as an Episcopalian; however, he didn't become a priest until "relatively late in life."

Although he now lives near Grass Valley, Parker grew up attending St. Mark's in Berkeley, where he later attended seminary at Church Divinity School of the Pacific, earning a Certificate in Anglican Studies.
After retiring as the Director of Library Services in Placer County in 2010, Parker was able to spend more time serving at Emmanuel, Grass Valley, his home parish.
In 2011, Parker worked on a congregational interest survey at Emmanuel that included questions on interest in seminary level learning. Subsequent conversations with Emmanuel's rector, Fr. Seth Kellermann, led Parker to discern that he felt called to ministry even though he stated that before then he'd "never thought about it exactly."
For the next five years of what Parker described as "a pretty typical process of reflection and discernment," Parker completed his studies, enrolled in the Clinical Pastoral Education program at UC Davis Medical Center and did his field work at St. John's, Chico.
Parker is now an associate priest at Emmanuel, helping others discern their calls, as well as carrying out his own.

Formation Goes Digital at Free Conference - June 6
The eFormation conference is all-online and free, from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 6. This free digital media for ministry learning conference from Virginia Theological Seminary provides opportunities for personal and professional development.
Workshops include: Digital-Only Faith Formation, Using Videos for Ministry, Theology by Design: A Practical Approach to Design Thinking for Congregations, Trying Everything: Experiences of Digital Evangelism and Fundraising. Two affinity group gathering times will also be offered for participants to share and ask questions about the future of their ministry. All workshops will be available afterwards. Summer Camp Nurses Needed

The Bishop's Ranch is looking for several registered nurses to work one or two weeks of their BREAD camp in July.
The RN position includes $750, room and board, family members can attend the week with them for free, and children of the nurse can attend any camp session for free (if interested/applicable).

Camp Galilee, on the Nevada shore of Lake Tahoe, is also looking for registered nurses to volunteer for week-long camp sessions, ranging from mid-July to early August.

Summer Camp Scholarships - Still Available!
Summer camper scholarships in the amount of $200 will be available to 60 children and youth on a first-come, first-served basis to be used for diocesan summer youth events.

Prayers Requested
Transfiguration House in Eureka is closing up, and the last of Northern California's Sisters of the Transfiguration are moving to the convent in Cincinnati on June 1.
The home will continue to be used as a place for prayer and church use. Please pray for safe travels and transitions for oblate Mattie Decker, the Rev. Sister Diana Doncaster and her cat Motka as they drive across the country. "It is hard to say farewell to this beautiful area and so many people I have come to love so dearly, but it is necessary," Doncaster wrote on her Facebook page.

A multigenerational group of 17 pilgrims, including Rector Sean Cox, from Faith, Cameron Park will be traveling to Honduras from June 4-12. Please pray for safe travels and a successful vacation Bible school experience.

St. James, Lincoln to Receive New Priest-in-Charge
The Rev. Sarah Quinney, assistant rector at St. John's, Roseville, has accepted a new call as priest-in-charge at St. James, Lincoln.
Her first Sunday at St. James will be June 25.
"While I am excited about my future ministry with the people at St. James, I am also very sad to say goodbye to the community I love at St. John's. I ask your prayers for all of us as we move through this transition. ... You have forever shaped me and my ministry."

adel is packing up and driving across the country to reunite with his wife, former diocesan Communications Director Paula Schaap, in New York. Please keep him in your prayers as he and their two dogs make the 2,800-mile trip.

2017 ECS Grant Recipients
ECS awarded a total of $14,000 in Ministry Development Grants. Congratulations to the five congregations who received the grants!
- St. Andrew's, Corning: "Reaching Out" Program to support county jail inmate transition into the community. $1,000
- St. James, Lincoln: Community Garden outreach to low-income families and seniors. $1,000
- St. John's Marysville: For the Community Services Coordinator to expand her work with the homeless coalition in Yuba County and to continue to partner with other agencies to serve the homeless population. $5,000
- Epiphany, Vacaville: Volunteer Upkeep Project, inviting the current community dinner attendees who are under- or unemployed to work at the church to develop better job skills. $2,000
ECS is especially pleased to announce their first ever
Warren Dunning Memorial Grant for Social Justice Ministries, which is a three year grant to assist congregations in developing long-term projects of benefit to their communities.
Our Saviour, Placerville: Program to develop a permanent Veteran's Stand Down Resource Center, of which there is only one other in existence. The need in Placer County for veterans' support is huge.
