Reading Our Way to a Better World
Summer Reading 2017

Summer is just around the corner. That means it's almost time for our 2017 Summer Reading Program. This year's theme is Build a Better World. Stay tuned for information about our fun and educational programs for all ages starting July 6th. 
Story Time Returns July 5th

Story Time is on a break while we're busy getting ready for the Summer Reading Program. Toddler Tales will be return on July 5th and the Baby and Me gang will be back on July 11th.Stay tuned for news about our special summertime Building Readers Story/Craft Hour starting July 7th.

Family Heritage Show and Tell
Thursday, June 15th, 2-4pm

Do you have an item in your attic or in your living room that has been passed down from generation to generation? Did it arrive with your family from another country? Then bring it to our Family Heritage Show and Tell to share the story! 
Refreshments will be provided at this very informal event for adults.
No registration needed.
 

June Book Club Meeting
Tuesday, June 13th, 1:30-3:00pm

The Helen Savoit Daytime Book Club meets the second Tuesday of each month at 1:30. This month's selection is Homecoming by Yaa Gyasi.  
Read the book and then come and join in on a lively discussion.

New members are always welcome!

Coloring Books for Adults
Tuesday, June 20th, 6-7:30pm

Discover the joy of adult coloring books. Come to unwind, while expressing your creativity! Adult coloring books offer a variety of designs, often intricate, just waiting to get lost in. Both colored pencils and fine tipped markers will be available, along with a wide variety of coloring books to choose pages from.

No registration needed for this Free program. Stop by at any point between 6pm and 7:30pm.

High School Battle of the Books
Starts Tuesday, June 20th, 5-7pm

The Howland Public Library is currently recruiting team members for their very first High School Battle of the Books team. This year is the first time Beacon will have a team in the high school competition. The Beacon Bees, the library's middle school team, were the 2010, 2013, & 2015 Regional Champions! 

Beacon's high school team will begin meeting on Tuesday, June 20th. Read great books and meet with coaches every Tuesday from 5-7 pm to discuss books, practice book-trivia, enjoy pizza and snacks, and participate in Battle-related activities. An All-Star Team will be formed to compete on August 19th against 12 other library teams for the Regional Championship.
 
The high school team is open to students in currently in 9th - 12th grade. Students may sign-up by contacting Michelle Rivas, Young Adult Program Assistant at Howland Public Library 313 Main Street, Beacon, NY, 845-831-1134, x.101 or [email protected].

Build a Better Podcast
6 Wednesdays starting July 12th

Calling all teen podcast fans! Did you ever wonder what it takes to create your own podcast? Find out this summer at the Howland Public Library. The Ground, Beacon's online community radio station, and the Library have teamed up for a 6 week podcast workshop for middle & high school students. During this weekly summer workshop, students will collaborate to produce a podcast, Building a Better Beacon , to air on the Ground. The free workshop will take place on 6 Wednesdays, July 12th - August 16th, from 4-5pm. 

The podcast workshop is a part of the library's Summer Reading Program. The Build a Better Podcast Workshop was made possible by a generous donation from the Friends of the Howland Public Library.
