Reflection for Worship . . .
You Look Different?!
Mark 9:-2-9
In our text for worship this week, the disciples experience the transfiguration, or dramatic change of Jesus. From teacher and rabbi to Christ figure - prefiguring the resurrection, and thus the crucifixion as well. Whether this change in appearance or perception - or both - happened all at once - as in this text - or over time is not so important to the writers - instead, it is the strength of the experience - the depth of Jesus' relationship to God that is the important take away. In a sermon entitled "You Look Different?!" We will consider when and where you experienced a dramatic change in your life - and what that kind of change could mean for our faith. Join us for worship this Sunday in the Chapel - and stay for our Shrove pancake brunch and festivities in the parlors after worship!

What's Next?!
If the sale of our building closes escrow without any snags, what work do we need to pick up during the coming months as we transition to a new space? Join us on Sunday February 18th at 11:15AM in the East Parlor for a time of sharing and updates! We will hear about the rooms we have access to as renters in our church, hear what properties are available for us to look at purchasing or leasing in Pasadena, how we are inviting sign-ups for those who can help with sorting church possessions and planning a celebration before we leave. We will also have time to share in small groups what we hope to take with us to our new location (our welcoming nature, our vision and values, trusty handbells) and what we hope to let go of in our transition (resentment about money management, struggles with previous pastors, our fatigue at keeping up our current building). Note the date and early starting time - come join us and get up to speed on how you can participate in our change!
Also on Sunday
This Sunday marks the last Sunday before Lent - which means it's Pancake Time!! We will do our Shroving this Sunday with merriment and food. Shrove Tuesday, as was traditionally done, was when you ate up all the fat and rich foods in the house before the ritual of fasting and eating less extravagantly during Lent. Lent is a time when folks set aside 40 days for particular practices - either refraining from doing something or taking on a practice, especially in areas of life that will encourage self-examination or spiritual growth. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" in which one indulges one last time before the season begins. So, we will be feasting on pancakes with butter and syrup, vege and meat sausages, plus fruit!
We still need folks to bring meat sausages and bacon - please pre-cook them so that the pancake flippers can have the entire kitchen to cook. We can keep your bacon/sausage warm in the oven during worship. Lent begins on Wednesday with our Ash Wednesday potluck and worship here at FCC on
Wednesday Feb. 14th- we are hosting several area churches and need our folks to bring entrees. See article below for more details.

Lenten Offerings 2018
On
February 14th the season of Lent begins! We will be the host for the Area Ash Wednesday Worship Service this year. Rev. Kristin Philipson will be our preacher and we will also involve pastors and Members in Discernment (candidates for ministry in the UCC) in the service. We will begin with a potluck in our parlors at 6:00 p.m. A combined choir will practice at 6:30 and then worship will commence at 7:00 in our sanctuary. Connie Washburn will be planning and leading the music for the evening. Please bring entree food so other churches can focus on side dishes, salads and desserts.
We have three homes offered for us to meet in small groups this Lent to discuss
Chasing Francis by Ian Morgan Cron. Thank you to those who have offered their homes for us this year!
The book is a modern tale for someone in a faith crisis, set against the story of St. Francis from the early 1200's. You may sign up to discuss at one of these three homes and times:
Wednesdays March 7 and 21 at Sue Miele's home at 6:30. Light meal provided by Sue.
Saturday mornings March 3 and 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bland home.
Sundays March 11 and 25 at the Brookey-Cordova home at 4:00 p.m.

Our Church School Teachers are planning several special events and outings during Lent (Feb. 14 through April 1st) for our children and youth. These will include:
- handing out piggy banks for children to use at home and donate offerings from their families and friends over the 40 days,
- Cookie baking fund-raiser on Sunday Feb. 18th to support a Lenten outreach offering,
- a Palm Sunday egg hunt and picnic at Mc Donald Park at Bell/Wilson Ave,
-and a very special outing after Easter to Universal Studios if we reach our fund-raising goal of $200 (all of which will be sent to an organization which the children shall select). Look for updates in our Touchstone each week. Thank you teachers for organizing such interesting and fun Lenten activities!!

Union Station, Bad Weather Shelter and Habitat for Humanity

Bad Weather Shelter- Our next date to serve is Saturday Feb. 24th. Details will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. Thanks to Bob Rinck for being our Food Coordinator. Sign up sheets are posted on Sundays. Get your Hep A shots in the meantime!
Habitat for Humanity - a few FCC folks are trying to go a few days each month for the local build right underneath the Colorado bridge called the Desiderio Homes Construction. The next two dates that Lu Burd and Elizabeth Lanski are going are Feb. 14th and Feb. 28th from 8:00-11:30 a.m.

Lamplighters Invites you to a "Winter Arts Crawl" on Saturday, Feb. 24th!
We will meet for dinner at Carrow's Restaurant on the corner of Fremont and Mission at 5pm, and then head down Mission Street to have a "Neighborhood Night on the Town," perusing open galleries, art activities, and enjoying live musical performances, and discounts in dozens of unique retail locations. All of the Arts Crawl galleries and businesses are located on Mission Street, Fremont Avenue or Meridian Avenue. Artists and businesses are teaming up to celebrate the winter season with this fun and family friendly event. There will be open houses, food and drink specials, and special events throughout the business district. The event kicks off Women's History Month in March, with the theme of "Bad Girls," based on the book,
"Bad Girls Throughout History: 100 Remarkable Women Who Changed the World."

2018 Flower Chart
We have many openings to bring flower or "flour" for Sunday worship. If you sign up and give Nina $40 a beautiful live bouquet will be ordered for you. Or you may opt for the "flour" option which means that your $40 donation will be sent to a local hunger organization (LA Regional Food Bank) in your name and our wheat display will be on the altar. Please let Nina know when you sign up which option you would like.
