JUNE SHORT MEMORIAL SERVICE  June Short
Friday, February 16 at 2 pm

A memorial service for June Short will be held at the Church of the Resurrection on Friday, February 16 at 2 pm.  Final arrangements are still pending.
SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER and BURNING OF THE PALMS
6 pm on Tuesday, February 13

Shrove TuesdayBring your family to Resurrection on Tuesday, February 13 to enjoy a delicious pancake supper before the season of Lent begins.  We'll be serving pancakes, sausage, bacon and drinks beginning at 6 pm.
                         
Shrove Tuesday originated during the Middle Ages.  To keep food from being wasted, families would have big feasts on Shrove Tuesday in order to consume those items that would inevitably become spoiled during the next forty days. The English tradition of eating pancakes on Shrove Tuesday came about as a way to use as much milk, fats, and eggs as possible before Ash Wednesday began. 
 
Palms Bring your palms from Palm Sunday last year to burn for ashes  
 
Bring them to the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper and join Fr. David for a brief service to bless and burn the palms.  The palms are a reminder of Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem.  The ashes symbolize death and remind us of our mortality.  The ashes created at the burning of the palms will be used in our Ash Wednesday services. 

ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICES
Two services on February 14 Ash Wednesday

On Wednesday February 14 we will celebrate the beginning of Lent with the imposition of ashes at services starting at 12:15 and 7:00 pm in the Nave. This traditionally marks the penitential period of 40 days as we remember Jesus' journey to Jerusalem before the great celebration of Easter. Please plan on attending one of the two service offerings this day.


UNITED THANK OFFERING (UTO)  UTO
Lenten Discipline
  
The Outreach Committee is sponsoring a United Thank Offering during Lent (February 14 through March 29).  Please consider taking a UTO box and prayer from the narthex.  The UTO box is intended to help us recognize our many daily blessings.  As you become aware of a simple or great blessing God has provided, you are encouraged to say a prayer of thanksgiving and recognize God's grace with an offering placed in your family's UTO box.
  
The boxes should all be returned to church on Easter or the following Sunday. Funds collected will be used by the Diocese to support ministries at home and overseas.
NECESSITY PANTRY NEEDS Canned Goods
In-gathering is Sunday, February 18
  
February needs for the Pantry include winter clothing, disposable razors, toothpaste, toothbrushes, women and men's deodorant, cereal, soup and canned vegetables.  Monetary donations are also gratefully accepted.
 
Can you help?  Please bring your contributions to the Church and leave them in the narthex.
INQUIRERS CLASS 
Tuesdays beginning February 20 at 6:30 pm
  
A new Inquirers Class will begin on Tuesday, February 20.   Classes will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 pm for five weeks.  This class is a prerequisite for anyone wishing to be confirmed (ages 11 and up).  Area Confirmation will be held on Saturday, April 7, at 2 pm at Grace & Holy Trinity Cathedral. Inquirers Class
 
Everyone is welcome to come to the class to learn about the Episcopal Church!

A MESSAGE FROM FR. DAVID
Instructed Eucharist to be celebrated at 10:30 am
Service on Sunday, February 18
 
As many who attend Episcopal Churches come from other faith traditions, we will celebrate an instructed Eucharist to help explain why we do what we do on Sunday mornings. The service at 10:30 on 2/18 will help to orient everyone to the liturgy. We will welcome Rev. Marshall Scott as the narrator and commentator for this service as I do my normal actions through the service.
 
The Holy Eucharist (also called the Mass, the Holy Communion, the Lord's Supper,
or the Divine Liturgy) has been the central act of Christian worship since New Testament
times. In it we give thanks -the Greek word eucharistia, means thanksgiving - as we
celebrate God's saving acts in Christ. We participate in Christ by receiving the consecrated bread and wine which are, according to his own words, his Body and Blood. Throughout the centuries, the Holy Eucharist has been regarded as both awesome and intimate, both majestic and homely. Christians have developed ceremonies and devotions to express both these aspects, emphasizing sometimes one, sometimes the other. We draw upon these rich traditions in order both to dramatize our reverence before the awesome majesty of God and to bring home to all worshipers the loving intimacy of our Savior. Our worship continues the ancient rituals of western Christianity and grows out of the practice of the reformed catholic Church of England, beginning with the First Book of Common Prayer of 1549.
