A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JAY

I have written, and spoken often about the fact that much of our liturgy, and the focus of our days, is designed to make us present to the world around us.  We bless things that we eat, or see, or come in contact with, in order to enable us to experience them on a higher level.

But some of our liturgy is also designed to have us look inward and at ourselves.  For instance, every morning as part of the preliminary prayers we say two very specific prayers.  In the first we thank God for the gift of our body; in the second we thank God for the gift of our soul.

In the first blessing, known as "Asher Yatzar"(fashioning the human body) we acknowledge God's design of the wonders of our body. We thank God for creating openings and closings, marvelous in structure and intricate in design. We further acknowledge that should any one of them fail to function, it would be impossible to survive.  We are thanking God for our actual physical existence.

In the second blessing, known as "Elohai Neshamah", (The soul that You God gave me), we acknowledge God's gift of the soul.  We thank God for forming the soul and breathing it into each of us.  We further acknowledge that a body without a soul would be lifeless.

Our tradition tells us that we are created body and soul.  The body is our physical self; the soul is that piece of God that resides within each of us. The two need each other and one cannot survive without the other.

The Rabbis in the Talmud said the following of the relationship between the body and the soul:

Just as the Holy One fills the world, so the soul fills the body.
Just as the Holy One sees but is not seen, so the soul is seen but is not seen.
Just as the Holy One sustains the whole world, so the soul sustains the body.
Just as the Holy One is pure, so the soul is pure.
Just as the Holy One dwells in the innermost places, so the soul dwells in the innermost places.

Why does the liturgy place these two prayers next to each other? Perhaps it is to highlight the interdependence of one on the other.  Perhaps it is to let us know that we should be taking care of both our bodies and our souls.  We care for our bodies by eating correctly, by exercising, and by getting rest.  For many of us this makes sense.

But how do we take care of our souls?  By praying? By studying Torah?  Hmmmm. Maybe we should have an exercise class that combines a workout for our bodies and for our souls.  Cycling and Shokeling?  Diving and Davening?  Spinning and the Shema?  I'm always looking for suggestions.

Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

T RAVEL TO ISRAEL WITH THE JCC OF LBI

The JCC trip to Israel will take place October 7-18, 2018. The itinerary will take us from Tel Aviv to the Golan Heights, to a winery, to the Kineret, to a Kibbutz, to Sefad, to Jerusalem, to the Dead Sea, to Massada, to many museums, and more. At Massada we will be sharing in a bar mitzvah of one of our fellow travelers. What joy!

The JCC's first trip to Israel will take place October 7-18, 2018. The itinerary will take us from Tel Aviv to the Golan Heights, to a winery, to the Kineret, to a Kibbutz, to Sefad, to Jerusalem, to the Dead Sea, to Masada, to many museums, and more. At Masada we will be sharing in a bat mitzvah of one of our fellow travelers.

We will be immersed in Israeli history and culture and, at the same time, we will get to better know our selves, and each other.

So far an extraordinarily nice group of people have chosen to travel with us.

This trip that has been designed both for the person who has never been to Israel, and for the person who has visited frequently.  Come be a part of what is sure to be a trip of a lifetime.

In addition to a set itinerary, we will have some evenings where we will be free to explore on our own.  We will be provided with information on concerts or cultural events in the places where we will be.

The tour is officially flying El Al; however, if you want to fly United, ITC can help you to make arrangements.

To view a full itinerary and to download an on-line application, go to www.israeltour.com/jcclb .
