Dear Parents / Guardians, Students, Staff, and Friends of the Sanborn Regional High School Community. Here are your latest important announcements from Sanborn Regional High School:

Senior Spotlight : Ali Gannon
An Article by English Teacher Aaron Cass

When Ali is sitting on a tropical beach somewhere, taking a short vacation from her glamorous life as a Nobel Prize-winning biomedical engineer, I hope she thinks back fondly on her time here at Sanborn. For those of us lucky enough to have had her in class, we know she is bright, hard-working, and honest. All that, and what I appreciate most about Ali is her humility: she has all the excellent qualities of a top student and doesn't need to shout it from the rooftops. When I asked her what her dream was, she said simply, "To be happy." Understatement at its best.
Ali says that her best experience here at Sanborn has been, without hesitation, "Being a part of the student council." She has served the class of 2018 as both treasurer and vice president, and she says she really enjoyed having the opportunity to work with her peers for the benefit of the school. Additionally, she is the vice president of the National Honors Society and has won more academic awards that I have fingers to count.
Ali's current post-Sanborn plans are to attend either Worcester Polytechnic Institute or the Illinois Institute of Technology, where she's visiting in February. During her time here at Sanborn she has shined on the varsity field hockey team and hopes to continue playing depending on where she goes. It has been a pleasure and an honor to have gotten to know Ali these last few years, and I can't wait to see the heights she reaches after walking across that stage. Good luck, Ali - you rock!
Senior Spotlight : Brent Doughty
An Article by English Teacher Katie Graham

There are times when things get hard in life and it's difficult to see the wonderful things in the world around us. Brent Doughty is one of those people that helps bring some optimism back into the lives of the people he meets. I have met many people in my life and very few of them are made up of the genuine kindness that exudes from Brent every day.

Brent is dedicated to our school community and gets involved in many different activities. He's a member of Anime Club, Card Club, a past member of Chess Club, and a treasured member of Poetry Club. His words at Open Mics are meaningful and they touch the hearts of many. He's also always in for trying out new games and loves DnD!

Mr. Stone says of him: "Brent is a very ambitious and outgoing student. He always offers to help others in the classroom and makes sure everyone feels welcome. His positive and can-do attitude is refreshing!"

Ms Petraitis said: "Brent is constantly questioning things like characters motives and finding ways to connect with the content he's learned. He is such a joy to teach!"

I could fill an entire newsletter with how Brent makes my classroom a better place! My most heartfelt congratulations to you, Brent, for everything you've accomplished here at Sanborn. Good luck in your future endeavors!

A Message About Weather Cancellations at Sanborn
From Superintendent Thomas Ambrose

Dear Parents, Staff and Students,

As you know, this has been an exceptionally difficult year with regard to cancelling school. We have had wind-related events, snow events, power outages, and many issues with ice and black ice. We take student safety seriously and carefully consider many factors before cancelling school. I have received some excellent questions, concerns, and ideas regarding snow days. I really appreciate it when parents, students or staff members email or call me directly. I am happy to help whenever I can. Ultimately, safety is paramount. When faced with a difficult decision regarding travel and the weather we will always put safety first. I am writing today to share important information about two issues. First, the process for making decisions regarding cancelling school due to weather. Second, the next steps for planning the end of the school year.

Starting at 4 A.M. we take the following steps before making the decision to cancel school:
  1. Review many weather projections including, but not limited to the Accuweather application, The Weather Channel, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), the GFS (Global Forecast System), and the EURO (European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting).
  2. Talk with local professionals who treat the roads and manage our facilities. This includes the facilities director of Sanborn Regional School District, local road agents, and (at times) local police and/or fire departments.
  3. Consult with two to three other superintendents (the superintendent of Fremont is always consulted because Fremont sends approximately 200 students to our high school). We discuss the opinions of our road agents and staff. We usually decide to take the same course of action.
We take the decision to cancel school very seriously. We always keep in mind that in addition to the busses we have students who drive home or to the Seacoast School of Technology in Exeter. Despite our best efforts, we have had three student driving accidents due to weather this year. Thankfully, they have all turned out for the better and no one has been seriously injured.

We have had to cancel school the equivalent of seven days so far this year. The administration is considering a variety of ways to address the unusually high number of days we have missed. We also recognize that there is still a lot of winter ahead of us. We will be in touch as soon as possible with a plan to complete the school year as early as possible in June while fulfilling our commitment to student learning. It is important to remember that Sanborn Regional School District uses the State of New Hampshire approved model of counting instructional minutes for students, not the number of school days. Currently, all of our schools have the maximum number of instructional minutes per school day allowed by New Hampshire regulation. This is very helpful because students don't have to make up every day they miss, we have to make sure we hit the correct number of instructional minutes to complete the school year.

I will be in touch as soon as possible with a plan for the rest of the year. In the meantime, I suggest you take a moment to look out your window and take in all the beauty a New England winter has to offer.
