iScreen, YouScreen, Wii All Screen:  A Family Guide to Media Use by Dr. Scott Goldstein and Dr. Rebecca Unger ~ Town Hall Meeting
Judy Deogracias introduced Dr. Scott Goldstein and Dr. Rebecca Unger and their presentation about social media and technology's effects on children. The doctors provided wide ranging information about technology and social media's effects on children, from birth to adolescence. Along with the  beneficial and challenging effects of technology, the presentation included the findings from current research and university studies on the extent that students use technology and various media. Both doctors also reviewed the American Academy of Pediatrics' (AAP) recommendations for technology and media use at varying ages and offered practical suggestions about incorporating the AAP guidelines into family practice. The presentation included official definitions of cyber-bullying and sexting as well as suggestions for uncovering their presence in students' lives.

Complementing the social media presentation, Technology Director Kevin Martin and Instructional Specialists Lindsay Johnson, Annmarie Clasky, and Cindy Crannell provided an overview of District 90's practices regarding technology and media use. The presentation included information about the District's Acceptable Use Policy, the Instructional Technology/Student Data Privacy Resource Guide, the Technology Lending Agreement, and the Parent Tech Tips website. The Instructional Specialists also explained how technology is used in District 90 classrooms as well as the responsibilities of students, teachers, and families regarding student use of technology.

Questions and comments from the audience touched on several topics, including how parents can help students with homework, student use of technology during lunch or recess, recommended ages for students to be able to use technological devices without supervision, as well as other concerns.

Dr. Condon thanked Dr. Unger, Dr. Goldstein, Technology Director Kevin Martin, and Instructional Specialists Cindy Crannell, Annmarie Clasky, and Lindsay Johnson for their presentations. He also complimented Judy Deogracias for her leadership on this topic.  Additional information can be viewed in the Board Packet
