Sustainable Lighting

Explore lighting and its role in sustainability-focused building design and operations, specifically in relation to LEED v4 with an emphasis on materials credits.
This seminar, intended for both building design and lighting professionals, will introduce attendees to the various material transparency disclosures and optimizations currently available, using lighting as a framework of understanding. Additionally, participants will explore the importance of lighting in 'whole building" lifecycle impacts management, predominant lamp technologies and energy related life cycle impacts, and lighting considerations for human health and thriving.
A general summary of terminology will be included during this course hour, so that attendees feel confident in asking for, and using the information within the available transparency material disclosures. We will underscore the basics, such as life cycle analyses, environmental impact categories of EPD, "Red Listed Ingredients of Concern," responsible sourcing and supply chain, and third party verified platforms.
Speaker Michael Johnson serves as Director of Sustainability at 3form, providing direction and oversight to corporate environmental and social responsibility policies and initiatives.

The USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter's LEED Community Project aims to assist other non-profits interested in greening their buildings by seeking certification using LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance (EB:O&M) or another appropriate LEED Green Building Rating System. The non-profit participant gets a healthier, more environmentally and fiscally responsible building while volunteers gain experience working on a LEED project.
The Commerce Bank Center for Science Education earn LEED Silver certification in 2012, under LEED 2009 for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance.
Volunteers will gain hands-on experience with a LEED project, may report participation for GBCI CE hours, and will help a treasured cultural institution earn one of the first LEED v4 EB:O&M certifications in our region! Volunteers must hold an active USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter membership.

Green Shadow is a mentorship program developed by the USGBC-Missouri Gateway Chapter Higher Education committee to expose students and emerging professionals to green jobs within the Missouri Gateway territory through an informational interview, half day shadow, or one day shadow of local business people. Participating companies get access to local students interested in the industry without the financial commitment of an internship.
We are looking for Mentors and Shadows to participate in the Green Shadow program. Apply by February 9th, 2018 at 11:59 pm to be matched in the Spring 2018 semester.

USGBC's call for nomination of qualified applicants is now open for the 2018 class of LEED Fellows. To be eligible, nominees must show at least 10 years of exemplary impact with LEED in each of their selected mastery element and demonstrate significant contributions to LEED, be a LEED AP with specialty credential in good standing, and have held a LEED professional credential for eight years.
Nominators must have a LEED AP with specialty credential in good standing, and 10 years of professional LEED experience. In addition, nominees will need to compile a team of endorsers to write statements attesting to the nominee's exceptional impact in key areas.

Meet Missouri Botanical Garden scientists at the Monsanto Research Center and learn how they collect, study, and conserve plants. Tour our 7 million-specimen herbarium and visit the Peter H. Raven Library, one of the most comprehensive libraries of botanical literature in the world, including more than 6,500 rare books.
You can also learn about the Garden's community sustainability programs by joining the EarthWays Center staff at the Commerce Bank Center for Science Education. EPA Region 7 is accepting applications from b
usinesses, industry, tribes and nonprofits from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska for the EPA Region 7 2018 Pollution Prevention Awards Program. These non-monetary awards recognize environmental excellence.
Pollution prevention (P2) is a successful, non-regulatory approach to energy conservation, water conservation, reduction of toxic materials used, and money savings. This awards program is designed to further recognize P2 successes and encourage other entities to consider a P2 approach.
P2 includes practices that reduce environmental releases of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants
prior to entering a waste stream for recycling, treatment, or disposal. In other words, P2 is source reduction, the prevention of generating waste and environmental releases at the source. P2 is not treatment, minimization, or diversion of wastes. P2 conserves natural resources, including water and energy.
Awards will be presented at the Midwest Environmental Compliance Conference (MECC) on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at the Kansas City Convention Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
