 Achievements in Our Classrooms
Lower School: World Read Aloud Day

Research shows that reading aloud to children every day puts them almost a year ahead of children who do not receive daily read alouds, regardless of parental income, education level, or cultural background. So what better way to kick off the month of February in our Lower School than by enjoying World Read Aloud Day? An international day recognized by schools around the world, World Read Aloud Day celebrates literacy and encourages kids of all ages to read and be read to. With the help of our Ursuline community, we did just that!

On Thursday, February 1st, our Lower School students had the pleasure of listening to various stories read to them by our Middle School students and volunteer alumnae. Middle School teacher, Erin Pudlo, arranged a day of story-writing, story-telling, and collaborative activities in the Lower School with the help of her 6th-8th graders and books such as  The Book with No Pictures  and  We Are in a Book! . Furthermore, our Alumnae Relations Specialist, Joanna Arat, recruited the help of four of our alums to read. One alum was thrilled to spend the first day of her retirement reading to her granddaughter's class, while another alum was able to read to her great nephew's class. The Lower School wishes to extend special thanks to all who made this day so special for our students!

Middle School: Spartan Speech Classic

Communication is an integral part of our lives. It is our way of forming connections, voicing opinions, and motivating change. Public speaking can be daunting, but the benefits outweigh the fear. Standing in front of a group of people to deliver a powerful speech or an interesting story builds confidence, determination, and grit.  As educators, we strive to build these skills in our students, which is why Ursuline participates in speech competitions.

On February 3rd, three Middle School students participated in the Spartan Speech Classic held at St. Mark's High School. Sarah Freville, Abby Garcia, and Bridget Lugg delivered speeches to rooms full of students and parents. They were confident and poised, and represented UA so well!

Oral Interpretation Speech -  Sarah Freville, 6th grade
Oral Interpretation Speech -  Abby Garcia, 7th grade
Declamation Speech -  Bridget Lugg, 8th grade

Congratulations to Bridget Lugg and Sarah Freville for winning 2nd place in their categories!

Upper School: Dual School at 1313 Innovation

"We awake every day to a world that challenges us, and we challenge it back," is a tenet of our Portrait of a Graduate that goes hand in hand with the mission of Dual School. Funded by Paul McConnell, Dual School provides high school students the opportunity to find solutions to a real-world problem that they are passionate about.

Katie Carrig '20 was chosen to participate in the inaugural cohort of Dual School. She selected food waste as her problem to solve, and her project was creating a donation program for leftover school food that would support those who need it most. Over the course of the last three months, Katie researched the issue, collaborated with a professional with experience in her problem area, created and tested different prototypes, and learned that road blocks are a necessary part of the process. Dual School gave her the tools, motivation, and confidence to bounce back when hitting obstacles and to become comfortable with trying multiple ideas before finding success.

The cohort's culminating event was a discovery day held on January 30 th  at Paul McConnell's 1313 Innovation Center in Downtown Wilmington. This event was a celebration of the 13 students who were part of the inaugural cohort and included breakout sessions from each participant presenting their Dual School experience, their trials and tribulations, their successes, and their next steps. With the success of the fall cohort, Dual School is now in the process of planning for the spring group. We had 10 students apply and look forward to having more of our students experience this unique opportunity.

"Dual school has been such an amazing experience. It has really helped me build my confidence and grow as a leader, while making a significant impact on our local community. The food donation program I started at Ursuline has already donated over 100 food items. I really hope it continues to expand, and I hope other Ursuline girls get the opportunity to experience Dual School as well," said Katie.

Our Upper School teacher Erin McNichol has been instrumental in Ursuline's involvement in Dual School. Erin not only served on the initial planning team that helped develop Dual School but also served as a mentor for one of the students in the fall cohort. This work goes hand in hand with the Innovation and Leadership courses that Erin leads here at UA. Her hard work and determination has been instrumental in establishing Ursuline as a pioneer in the field of innovation, and in continuing the program that Paul McConnell has helped to fund over the past two years. Our partnership with Paul McConnell and the Horn Entrepreneur Program at the University of Delaware has opened the door in collaborating with many local entrepreneurs and national groups like Go Baby Go!. This partnership also allows us to continue to provide our students with an opportunity to challenge the world.

TEDxYouth
Call for Speakers
It's that time again! We're gearing up for our next TEDxYouth  event hosted here at Ursuline Academy, and we're looking for speakers.

The theme this year is "Pioneers and Poets". The
foundation of the theme is that while pioneers explore the unknown, the poet
must craft something beautiful from their explorations. This is an incredible  opportunity for us to collectively ask ourselves where  we are today and where  we want to be tomorrow.

If you have an idea worth spreading, whether you're a student, family member, alumnae, or a member of the local community, we want to hear from you. The application deadline is February 16, so don't wait! Click here  to apply.

Faculty Spotlight
Innovation & Leadership: Erin McNichol
Entering Erin McNichol's 1313 Innovation classroom, one immediately realizes that you are "not in Kansas anymore." Around you, students are moving themselves between groups to collaborate on the latest challenge, building prototypes of ingenious inventions, and video-chatting with a business mentor from the Solstice Interactive Board. Innovative leadership has truly come to life at Ursuline through Erin's leadership.

In 2004, Erin worked with a math teacher at a local elementary school to find contemporary connections between art and mathematics, which led her to explore a role in the classroom and ultimately to Ursuline Academy. Serving on our arts faculty for many years, Erin consistently explored the topic of the interconnectedness of our world - a theme she experienced while living abroad in Luxembourg in the late 1990s/early 2000s. Erin's diverse background is perfect for the forward-thinking tenure of the innovation classroom.

Whether it is investigating ways to use animal science to solve the needs of the medical community or developing methods to increase interpersonal skills, Erin guides her students to think about the world as a blank canvas. She supports them as they engage in trial and error in exploring solutions to real-world issues. Her favorite moments are when she "sees a team of students collaborating with each other and offering unique perspectives," and when she works with a student who is "ready and willing to think outside of the box."

Contracts along with a non-refundable deposit are due by Thursday, March 1st, however, if your family has been awarded tuition assistance, the deadline to secure your award is February 16th. Your adherence to these deadlines also secures your child's place for the year ahead and allows the Academy to accurately plan staffing and overall budget. Thank you for your support in this effort.
