The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry announced a
new industrial manufacturing technician apprenticeship at the Gettysburg Campus of
HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College
.
Governor Tom Wolf noted the importance of apprenticeships in meeting the needs of employers while helping Pennsylvanians learn skills that lead to family-sustaining wages. Deputy Secretary Cipriani formally announced the approval of a second cohort of HACC's Industrial Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Program. Employees from Hain Pure Protein will participate in the program by attending classes at HACC's Gettysburg Campus. PA community colleges provide training throughout the state to build a pipeline of skilled workers and meet regional employer's needs.
Westmoreland County Community College
is one of four community and technical colleges in the mid-Atlantic region to receive $630,000 in funding from Coraopolis-based Chevron Appalachia to prepare students for careers in the energy and advanced manufacturing industries.
Chevron is funding the schools' ShaleNET programs, which focuses on an adaptable curriculum to build transferable skills for use in the energy and advanced manufacturing careers. It is part of a multiyear collaboration that works to close the region's skills gap by enhancing STEM education and workforce training programs.
Westmoreland County
Community College will receive $212,000 that will go toward equipment to provide students with hands-on experience and facilitating workforce forums for careers in energy and advanced manufacturing. Chevron Appalachia spokesman Trip Oliver said the company's success is linked to the region's progress, and that they are proud to "provide education and training programs that support the region's citizens and contribute to economic growth."
In 2016-17 academic year, 32 programs across the Southern Alleghenies provided training in targeted industries such as advanced materials and diversified manufacturing, energy, logistics and transportation through the Workforce Development division of Pennsylvania Highlands Community College. During 2018, Penn Highlands Workforce Development and Career Services will continue to meet with companies such as Stoystown Tank and Steel to design training programs to fill a range of skill gaps. The programs improve employee productivity and effectiveness. Penn Highlands has a WEDnetPA allocation of $300,000 to help provide training for eligible companies.
Recruiters with the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company and four other volunteer fire departments visited the local high school to encourage students to think about the benefits of becoming a firefighter. Young people can serve their communities and earn college scholarships for programs at
Butler County Community College
. If students enter the program and join the fire service as juniors, they can work to complete all four modules required and have all the necessary training shortly after they turn 18 years old. The scholarships to attend the fire service program at Butler are courtesy of the Cranberry Township Community Chest.
Lance Corporal Travis Miller had credits transferred from a Career and Technical Institute to
Northampton Community College
where he studied criminal justice. He earned his associate degree while working full time. He commends the retired NYPD professor at
Northampton
for sharing her expertise. Travis took courses in law enforcement which are preparing him to hopefully enter the Pennsylvania State Police Academy. He has always wanted to serve his community and chose his current path after a year of active duty as a Marine.
Use of "small unmanned air craft systems" is becoming popular across many industries, prompting the second series of classes on drone operation at Lehigh Carbon Community College. The courses include classroom training and field experience in order to prepare students for the Federal Aviation Administration Remote Pilot Certification test. Additional coursework is being developed to adapt the curriculum for commercial application in careers such as land development and building inspection.
