The humble Magneto is often the forgotten unit under the cowling but the consequences of its neglect can be devastating. Its function is to provide an electrical spark to ignite the fuel/air mixture in the engine cylinders, yet it's not part of the electrical system. Used on most reciprocating aircraft engines, Magnetos are engine-driven, self-contained units that supply electrical current without an external source of current. Although inherently reliable, Magnetos need regular maintenance to avoid possible catastrophic results.
