Program Announcement
Community Remote Net Metering 30MW Pilot

Dear Partners:

RIHousing is excited to be participating in a new energy program, the Communit y Remote Net Metering Pilot . Approved during last year's legislative session, the program allows non-profits and community members to "buy-in" to off-site or remote clean energy generation. Not only is this a potential operating cost savings opportunity, but it also does our part to reduce carbon emissions and contribute to the State's 80 % GHG reductions by the 2050 goal .  The clean energy produced will contribute to Governor Raimondo's initiative to reach  1000kw  in
Rhode Island by 2020.

RIHousing will be coordinating with National Grid and the RI Department of Energy Resources to administer the program. Our new Energy Specialist & Liaison is available to work with property owners and  explain how the program works. Please call Brigid Ryan at 429-1435 with
any questions.

Sincerely,

Barbara Fields

Program Announcement:
Community Net Metering 30MW Pilot

Legislation passed in 2016 amended the State's net metering law to include a set-aside for community remote net-metering. Previously, only municipalities and a few other categories of agencies could participate in net metering.

What is community remote net metering?
Community Remote net-metering, sometimes referred to as virtual net-metering, is an arrangement that permits the kilowatt hours (kWh) generated from a qualified electric generation facility (typically wind or solar) at a specific, remote site to be credited towards kWh consumption at another site. The site that receives the credits on their electric bill then uses a portion of the energy savings to pay the developer of the generation facility.

One of the main reasons a building owner may want to participate in this type of arrangement could be that their site is not suitable for on-site electric generation. Other benefits may include:
  • no upfront development costs,
  • permitting for one single site is easier and faster than several locations,
  • aggregation of demand can result in better rates, and
  • lower your building's carbon footprint by using clean, renewable energy.
This is a great opportunity to save an estimated 5% - 20% or more on your development's electric bills.

National Grid is administering the program.
