On Thursday, February 1, Claflin University, Benedict College and Voorhees College announced the officers for its Corporate Executive Employer Advisory Council of The Carolina Cluster Career Pathways Program. This advisory council will work along with the Public Sector Executive Employer Advisory Council that was announced on Thursday, January 25.

The vision of the Carolina Cluster is to develop a model Career Pathway Initiative that transforms approaches to student achievement and success, by producing prepared and career-ready HBCU graduates that are coveted by employers and graduate programs, in order to improve our students' generational socio-economic status. Both advisory councils will work to promote collaboration between the three Carolina Cluster member institutions and senior-level business and industry leaders of national, regional and local employers.

The Carolina Cluster Career Pathways Program was created in December 2016 through a $6 million grant by the UNCF® Career Pathways Initiative (CPI), funded by Lilly Endowment, Inc. The priorities of the grant are to improve employment outcomes for graduates through guided pathways, curricular enhancements, and integrated co-curricular engagement.

The newly elected officers for the Corporate Executive Employer Advisory Council are:
  • Chairperson - Mr. Scott A. McGregor, Global Program Manager, Cisco
  • Vice Chairperson - Ms. VonGretchen C. Nelson, President and CEO, PCC Global Institute, LLC
  • Secretary - Ms. Rhonda Midgette, Vice President of Human Resources and Diversity, TD Bank, N.A.
Corporate Executive Employer Advisory Council consists of members who are senior-level business and industry leaders of national, regional and local employees. The Corporate Executive Employer Advisory Council will provide Carolina Cluster member institutions with insights into workforce needs. This workforce information will be utilized to direct future curricular decisions, with the goal to improve the professional readiness of Cluster Members' students necessary to meet employers' workforce needs.

During the meeting, Dr. Henry N. Tisdale, president of Claflin University; Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis, president of Benedict College; and Dr. W. Franklin Evans, president of Voorhees College welcomed the attendees and thanked them for their interest and support of the Career Pathways Program.

"We believe the Carolina Cluster Career Pathways Initiative is a game changer for our institutions," said Tisdale. "With an increasing emphasis on lowering debt and job placement we believe it's time to respond to the challenge. With the assistance and resources UNCF is providing, we believe our schools can become models and leading institutions that accept students who have financial and economic challenges and graduate them at unprecedented rates."

Additional presentations were given by Dr. Karl S. Wright, provost and chief academic officer of Claflin University; Attorney Cathy Scarborough Franklin, executive director of The Carolina Cluster Career Pathways Program, and Ms. Valeria Green, director of experiential learning for The Carolina Cluster Career Pathways Program, who outlined the evolution and purpose of the grant from UNCF, the formation and terms of the advisory officers, and the need for experiential learning.

Council members expressed their appreciation for the creation of this program and their desire to partner with the universities to fill positions with recent graduates. A lot of the discussion also centered around the teaching of workplace competencies. "Our hiring managers are looking for potential employees who will fit the culture of the company. We have to not only help students know the information of the company but also how to present themselves to employers," said  McGregor.

Claflin University Lyceum Series to Present "Langston Hughes Project - Ask Your Mama: Twelve Moods for Jazz"

The Claflin University Lyceum Series will present "The Langston Hughes Project: Ask Your Mama: Twelve Moods for Jazz," a multimedia concert by Dr. Ronald C. McCurdy on Wednesday, February 14 at 7 p.m. in the W.V. Middleton Fine Arts Center. Admission is free and open to the public.

"The Langston Hughes Project" is Hughes' kaleidoscope of jazz and poetry which features "Ask Your Mama," Hughes' homage to the struggle for artistic and social freedom at home and abroad at the beginning of the 1960s. It is a twelve-part epic poem which Hughes scored with musical cues drawn from a variety of genres including blues, Dixieland, gospel, boogie woogie, bebop, progressive jazz, and Afro-Cuban mambo music. Hughes died in 1967 before his "creative masterwork" was ever performed.

The multimedia presentation features a jazz quartet, spoken-word and images from the Harlem Renaissance. The concert performance links the words and music of Hughes' poetry to topical images to people, places, events, and the works of the visual artists he admired or collaborated with over the course of his career, such as Aaron Douglas, Romare Bearden, Richmond Barthe, Palmer Hayden, and Jacob Lawrence. Together the words, sounds, and images recreate a magical moment in our cultural history, which bridges the Harlem Renaissance, the post-World War II Beat writers' coffeehouse jazz poetry world, and the looming Black Arts explosion of the 1960s.

McCurdy premiered the orchestral version of the concert in 2008 with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra with rapper and television actor, Ice-T.

McCurdy is professor of music in the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California (USC). Prior to his appointment, he served as director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at USC. He was professor of music and chair of the Afro-African American Studies Department and director of jazz studies at the University of Minnesota. In 1997, McCurdy served as visiting professor at Maria-Sklodowska - Curie University in Lublin, Poland. In 2001 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Kansas, where he served for seven years as director of jazz studies. During his tenure, the University of Kansas jazz program gained national and international prominence by performing at music conferences and festivals throughout the world.

McCurdy earned his undergraduate degree at Florida A&M University and his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Kansas.  He is a consultant to the Grammy Foundation's educational programs and director of the National Grammy Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Combo.  McCurdy has performed with a multitude of famous jazz artists, including Wynton Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Arturo Sandoval, Ramsey Lewis, Mercer Ellington, Dr. Billy Taylor, Maynard Ferguson, Lionel Hampton, and
Dianne Reeves.
