A Message from your
2017 KS SHRM State Director

Shelbye Smith

Hello, Kansas SHRM!

It's hard to believe, but the 2017 KS SHRM State Conference is just a few short months away! Our Conference Chair, Tami Seaman, and the conference planning committee have been busy planning what is sure to be an amazing annual conference! This year's theme is "Play Ball with HR" and we hope you will join in on all the wonderful activities happening at the conference. Please visit our conference website for more information:  www.2017.ksshrm.org.

As we approach our upcoming conference, I can't help but think of all the changes that have already occurred this year. Nationally, we have a new President. With a new administration, it brings a lot of questions about what is going to happen in the business world and the United States as a whole. What is the future of healthcare? What about the overtime rule we heard so much about and spent so much time preparing for? What is going to happen with paid leave? While it may take some time for all of these things to be answered, they are questions many of us face on a regular basis. Locally, our state government just ended the second longest legislative session in history as they worked through challenges with the budget, taxes and school funding, which is sure to impact us and our businesses moving forward.

As HR professionals, we must be ready to "get in the game." One way to do that is to stay on top of what is happening in our national, state and local governments, as well as keep up-to-date on best practices in the human resource world. I hope that you will let us help with that by joining us in September for the 2017 KS SHRM State Conference. Over the course of the three days, you will hear from amazing keynote speakers including Mitch Holthus, Morag Barrett, Dayton Moore, and Pete Smith. Follow one of our four tracks for breakout sessions, or mix and match to get exposure to the topics that are most meaningful to you! Altogether, you can earn up to 11 hours of recertification credit for HRCI and SHRM.

If you want more educational and recertification opportunities, we have that for you! Please join us for our preconference workshop on "Effectively Managing Change and Conflict in the Workplace" with Amy Leslie. This workshop will earn you another 3 hours of recertification credit and includes lunch and an assessment.

We also have more social connection events than ever at this year's conference. We are all in this game together, so come build your team and meet other HR professionals at Wednesday's Tailgate Party in the Exhibit Hall. Finally, it is the Kansas SHRM social event of the year on Thursday evening at Topgolf! Join us for some food, drinks, and games while you connect with your HR friends from around the state!

I look forward to seeing you at the 2017 KS SHRM State Conference on September 20-22 in Overland Park.

Thank you for your support of Kansas SHRM!

Pre-Conference Workshop
Effectively Managing Change & Conflict in the Workplace - Amy Leslie, Perspective Consulting, Inc.
Leading people through change and managing (or better yet, preventing) conflict in the workplace, are some of the most important skills we can master. This workshop will give leaders insight into their own behavioral drives and personality. They will learn how their own personalities influence which leadership tactics they lean into when managing and influencing others. Participants will learn steps to effective change management, while considering how different personalities view and approach change, and what they need to feel comfortable with the process. Participants will also learn situational leadership tactics for managing various types of conflicts, while not forgetting about the "human element" of the parties involved. Ideally, participants will learn how to create an objective language and culture of understanding throughout their organization that lends itself to fewer conflicts. Learn how to prevent some conflict that bubbles up because of misunderstandings or personality differences.

This workshop is an interactive, hands-on workshop, which combines presentations, group discussions, activities and case studies, and includes a personalized assessment. To be a part of this 3-hour pre-conference workshop, simply add it to your conference registration (additional $60 charge will be applied to your conference fee). Lunch and assessment included in fee.
Breakout Session Tracks & Speakers
The keynote speakers are ready to take the field and we've working hard to scout out the best speakers for our breakout tracks. There are four tracks available in our breakout session lineup:
  1. Get the Best Players on the Field (People)
  2. Players Win Games, Teams Win Championships (Organization)
  3. If You Build It, They Will Come (Workplace)
  4. Win the Game Before it's Played (Strategy)
To review the lineup of session speakers/presentations in each track, see the KS SHRM Conference and Exposition Schedule on the Conference home page.
You're invited to a TAILGATE PARTY!
No parking fees necessary at this stadium but all KS SHRM fans are welcome! Join us for a Tailgate Party in the Exhibit Hall the first evening of the Conference. Mitch Holthus will be available for a meet & greet, as well as photo opportunities. Enjoy some food, fun, games and goodies. This will be your first chance to win in the Game Plan conference app game, so visit our amazing team of sponsors and exhibitors and support our MVPs. Best of all, kick back and show your spirit by sporting your favorite team's jersey. Are you ready to celebrate?
