Catholic Schools' Week Essay
by Abby Spoltman
I am currently a seventh grader attending Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School. Saint Elizabeth has helped develop my personal faith, knowledge, leadership abilities, service, and has prepared me for life beyond middle school. I have been given the privilege to take part in different programs and activities within the school, and I cannot imagine going to any other school.
Saint Elizabeth has improved my spiritual goals. I did not understand the meaning of Christianity. Saint Elizabeth's, along with other Catholic schools, religion curriculum helped me to understand my faith and improve my knowledge about the subject. It has taught me to look at it in a different point of view. I have the benefit of going to daily mass twice a week and occasionally going to adoration in religion class. I can talk freely about my faith without opposition.
I have also been given plenty of opportunities to improve my knowledge in other subjects and leadership skills through extracurricular activities. I have taken place in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics activities after school such as Lego robotics and Starbase 2.0, these have improved my science proficiency. There have also been opportunities to better my leadership abilities. I am on student council, National Junior Honors' Society, and I have started a new club at Saint Elizabeth. It was easy to do and administration was supportive of it. I have also taken place in activities that handle arts, such as art club and the spring musicals. Being involved will help me when I go into high school and college because I have learned how to manage my time.
Saint Elizabeth's school and parish have many service expectations of middle school students. Middle school is required to do service hours. The number of hours and activities correspond with each grade level. Doing service hours, I have been able to meet other students in our parish. Service hours have pushed me to be involved in more activities in the parish and school. I easily gain service hours, but I strive to do more because I enjoy the events and being able to meet other parishioners.
Most of all, Saint Elizabeth has prepared me for what comes after middle school. Not only for high school, but they already have me thinking about college and my occupation. We have college and career readiness in house every week. I disliked it at first, and I thought it was pointless. Over the course of the year, I have found use in it. I understand why the school wants me to be thinking about my future. Saint Elizabeth has turned me into a responsible middle school student that will be prepared for high school. It has made me responsible for my actions and helped me manage my time. I will have experience with juggling homework and leisure activities.
In conclusion, going to a catholic school has helped me to better my knowledge, become a better leader, develop my faith and service, and prepare me for life past middle school. I am thankful for the chance to go to a school that practices Christianity and helps me become a better person. I have learned how to set high expectations for myself and to continue to reach for them. Then I will set new ones, and the process repeats. I feel as though I will have success in the future and Saint Elizabeth has been preparing me for it.

A book writing contest for students in grades K-5.

What can you win?
Every participating author will be invited to a Young Authors Party at school where they will read their books to other students, eat popcorn, and watch a movie! Winners in grades K-2 will be invited to the city-wide Young Authors Conference at Wayne High School on Saturday, April 21st.

Who chooses the winners?
Books will be assessed by a group of teachers based on the 6+1 Writing Traits and creativity.

Where can I find more information?
All the necessary documents are posted on the school website.

When are the books due?
All books need to be completed and submitted to the school office no later than Wednesday, February 28th, 2018.
Late arrival books are welcome; however, they will not be considered in the judging and will not receive any awards.

The goal for the Young Author's Program is to inspire students to write a book and to enrich their writing skills. We are confident this event will be a fun and educational experience for the students.
