It's been an terrific year for SUSD, but now it's time to take a break! The next issue of
SUSD Connects
will be out in August.
Though schools are closed, central offices remain open. Remember to make sure your student has received the appropriate immunizations for the new school year. Call Health Services at (209)933-7060 for more information on this. School resumes for students on August 8! Questions about enrollment can be answered by the Education Services Department at (209)933-7040.
We hope you have a good rest, read a good book, have a lot of fun and come back ready for another successful year in our schools!

SUMMER PROGRAMS IN STOCKTON

Summer is here and there are a number of programs available for Stockton students. In addition to the extended years programs that many SUSD schools are offering, parents may also consider summer programs being offered by other Stockton organizations.

Thank you to the nearly 4,000 students, teachers and community members who participated in the 2017-18 Local Control Accountability Plan survey. The responses were tabulated and included in the proposed 2017 LCAP.
The survey found support for instructional technology and student safety, along with other top priorities that are included in the current program. It is important that your voice is counted so thank you for participating this year. As always, information about the LCAP can be found on the LCAP web page. The final public hearing on the proposed 2017 LCAP is June 13 at 5 p.m. at 701 Madison St. The draft 2017 LCAP will be placed on the LCAP page.
The SUSD Board will vote on the proposal 2017 LCAP on June 27.

Personalized Summer Learning Resource for All Ages
|
| Khan Academy, Ages 5-18
Khan Academy offers a wide range of subjects online for free. Kids learn at their own pace, and parents can track progress. Subjects include math, science, coding, history, art history, economics and more. Khan Academy partners with institutions, such as NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences and MIT to provide state of the art content. Kids learn through practice exercises and instructional videos. One advantage to using Khan Academy is it can be accessed all year long.

Washington Elementary Bike Rodeo
Washington Elementary School students and their families participated in the school's 'Bike Rodeo.' The event promoted biking safety and allowed participants to practice the rules they learned, such as appropriate hand signals while on the road.

Jane Frederick Holds Annual 'Brick by Brick' Competition
Mr. Miller's masonry class at Jane Frederick High School impressed the judges at the 9th annual brick laying competition, where they demonstrated the hands-on skills they've learned this year.

It was all science at the 2nd Annual SUSD Science and Engineering Expo, with more than 200 students from elementary and high schools throughout the district participating in such projects as robot competitions, a Minecraft challenge, chemical reaction experiments and, of course, toothpick/ marshmallow tower construction! Congratulations Class of 2017! Close to 2,400 students graduated from Stockton Unified high schools this year and are bound for colleges, universities, the military branches or work. We are so proud of them. This class had high graduation rates, low drop- out rates and strong academic showings. Edison High School students received more than $3.5 million in scholarships and grants. SECA's seniors helped make their high school the 26th top performer in the state and 95 percent graduated with at least a year of college credit under their belts. Chavez is sending a record ten students to the University of California, Los Angeles, this fall.
This year many of SUSD's grads plan to attend UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego or UC Davis. Others will go to out-of-state universities and still others to private universities, including the University of the Pacific, Stanford, and Northwestern universities. Others will attend California State University colleges or Delta Community College.
These students graduated with glittering celebration, moments of somber reflection and some fond farewells. They left our district in a flurry of selfies and dabs to music from Chavez jazz, Franklin strings and Edison choir. They are on their way! Rio 7th and 8th Graders Win Gold in 2017 National Academic Pentathlon
|
Congratulations to the 7th and 8th grade Rio Calaveras Pentathlon teams who took first place in the National Academic Pentathlon competition in Minneapolis this weekend! The competition was huge, with teams from all over the United States and even China in the mix.
But after a grueling set of written exams, centered around this year's theme of World War II and Nuclear Physics, Rio Calaveras teams were named the overall winners. Both teams also won the their Super Quiz competitions!
Coach Jennifer Duren said the teams studied hard for the event, and came back with not only the team wins, but 61 gold, silver and bronze individual medals. They medaled in such categories as literature, science, fine arts, history and math.
"It takes a whole community of support to reach this level," Duren said. "From each and every teacher, to parents, to our classmate. It is much more than just studying for a few tests. It is part of the culture of Rio Calaveras."
Big thanks to the Spanos Company for its wonderful gift to the Pentathlon team members and Coach Duren. During a special ceremony organized by Mayor Michael Tubbs for the last day of school, Spanos represenatatives Dea Spanos Berberian and Natalia Orfanos presented each student with a $250 check and presented Duren with a $1,000 check.
Community support is important to our schools. Special appreciation to Mayor Tubbs and the Spanos Family, as well as the Sacramento Kings, who also made an appearance and gave students bags of goodies for their excellent work.
Rio Calaveras qualified to represent California last month with their top scores on the statewide competition, earned during the county event put on by the San Joaquin County Office of Education.
A huge congratulations to Coach Jennifer Duren; the 8th grade team: Gerardo Chavez, Mamoona Faryal, Jolahnie Guzman, Aleksei Macatuno, Samiyah Muhammad, Tera Roberts, Jacqueline Sarabia, Aidan Tongco and Dulin Ye, and 7th grade team: Sa'Jean Alford, Steve Berry, Katy Chan, Metzli Herrera, Averie Moore, Ngoc Nguyen, Susan Wang and Pei Zhao.
What a contribution to your school, your community, the county and the state. Great Job!

| Young Authors Fair Promoting Literacy |
 Stockton Unified's 33rd annual Young Author's Fair was another huge success this year, with 20 schools participating and more than 200 students submitting books they'd written, illustrated and bound for the big event.
Hundreds of parents and students packed into Barnes and Noble Bookstore to check out the entries and hear their students read their stories aloud. Students worked for months developing class or individual story ideas, writing the actual story, illustrating the work and then binding the books by hand.
The exercise in literacy culminated in a record crowd at the bookstore, with student names filling poster boards for a chance to read their stories to a live audience.
Great job students, teachers and schools for this effort. And a big thanks to Barnes and Noble for once again hosting the SUSD community for a great event.

On Friday, May 19, 2017 the Parent/Community Empowerment Department partnered with the Oak Park Ice Rink to host a free family Ice skating event. As the weather scorched outside Stockton Unified School District families enjoyed a wintery cold front, as they glided and twirled across the ice. Let us not forget that we had our very on Ice Queen, Miss Asparagus festival 2017 on hand for photos.
It was such a joy to see parents and their children Ice skating together.

Stagg Graduate Named STEM Student of the Year
Among a long list of accomplishments and accolades at school, Cornelison took part in the Wakesman Student Scholars Program at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
While there, he helped discover a new gene in duckweed which may expedite use of the plant as a biofuel.
The recent graduate was ranked second in his seni
or class of 289, with an unweighted GPA of 3.98. Throughout his academic career Samuel pushed himself with a full transcript of Honors and A.P. courses. Samuel was also very active in extracurricular programs, campus events and athletics.
Congratulations on earning this honor Samuel and good luck in college!

SUSD Teachers in Running for San Joaquin County Teacher of the Year
Harrison 7-8 teacher Peter Gallegos, who has led Harrison Elementary's schoolwide embrace of 2017 science and technology, has been named San Joaquin County Teacher of the Year! Gallegos, an SUSD graduate and SUSD teacher for 13 years, will represent San Joaquin County in the competition for California Teacher of the Year.
Gallegos and Primary Years Academy first grade teacher Graciela Matty were both finalists in the running for this year's San Joaquin County Teacher of the Year. Matty, with 18 years of experience, has a tradition of rigor in her classroom demanded by both the state's Common Core standards and those adopted by PYA, the International Baccalaureate standards.
Matty and Gallegos were honored at this week's San Joaquin County Office of Education Teacher of the Year Dinner, where Gallegos was announced as this year's teacher of the year. Gallegos has been honored before for his hugely successful launch of "Project Lead the Way," a prescriptive robotics program aimed at improving student success in math, science and technology. He brought his students to a staff meeting to share their enthusiasm for the program, and suddenly every grade level was implementing PLW.
"His high expectations, sense of humor, and consistent follow-through make him extremely popular as a teacher and team member," reads the nomination form, completed by Harrison Principal Dan Wright with support letters from administrators and teachers. "When you walk into his classroom you can't tell the difference between the highest-achieving and lowest achieving students...they are equally engaged and fully participating in his lessons."
"And every student has been able to meet his expectations...that is what is most amazing."
Gallegos started the robotics program and then worked with the district to participate in the San Joaquin Delta VEX Robotics League, where last year his team was among the top placing competitors, beating out several high schools!
Congratulations to Peter Gallegos for his outstanding work for the students of Stockton Unified. We are rooting for you to become our next California Teacher of the Year!
