Maggie releases 2015 Petit Verdit for Mardi Gras!

Ever since Maggie won gold for her 2015 Petit Verdot at the San Francisco Chronicle's Wine Competition (SFCWC) in January, Wine Cave visitors have been asking one question: When will Maggie release her award-winning wine to the public?
Wait no more!
Maggie is releasing Petit Verdot 2015 Saturday, Feb. 10, just in time for the weekend leading up to Mardi Gras (Feb. 10-13).
The wine is one of four to win medals for Maggie at the SFCWC.  Th e other winners are:
  • Viognier 2016 - Silver
  • Merlot 2015 - Silver
  • Petit Verdot Reserve 2014 - Bronze

The  San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition  (SFCWC)  is the largest wine contest in the world solely for American wines.  More than 7,000 wines, submitted from 36 states, were reviewed in a blind judging by experts from the media, education, trade, and hospitality industries to determine the best wine America has to offer.
Because of the competition's size and the expertise of the judging panel, this competition is often considered the ultimate barometer for wine consumers to select and measure wine.  Maggie Malick Wine Caves was one of only 22, of Virginia's 270, wineries to win medals in the competition.
Maggie credits two factors for the wine's deliciously smooth finish. The first is Mark's carefully tended, estate-grown Petit Verdot grapes.
The other is the new American oak barrels crafted by  The Oak Cooperage, in Higbee, MO. Maggie used the barrels to age her wine for almost two years. The cooperage has been producing  American Oak barrels since  1972. Today, it is owned and operated by Silver Oak, a leading producer of California Cabernet Sauvignon aged exclusively in American oak.

What are Petit Verdot's unique characteristics?
Petiti Verdot is a hardy red grape with a lot of tannin. It  principally is used in Southwestern
France's Bordeaux
blends. (Other Bordeaux grapes are Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot).
It is a bold full-bodied red wine  characterized by floral notes, like violet, lavendar and lilac and; dark fruits, like plum, with a hint of spice.
In the Bordeaux region, "Petit Verdot" translates to "little green one" which, most likely, is because this grape is a late-ripening variety.
But in the New World, Petit Verdot ripens more reliably. Many connoisseurs consider Petit Verdot to be Virginia's red wine grape.
Petit Verdot pairings naturally with rich, meat dishes, grilled steak, spicy pork, veal, lamb, all types of game and sausage.  It pairs with cheeses, such as, p ecorino, manchego, gouda, aged cheddar and aged gruyere and; vegetables such as, mushrooms, lentils, truffles, black beans, wild rice, eggplant, onion and shallots.
