Minnesota's Joe Mauer takes a lead off first base after he was walked in the seventh inning, as Giants first baseman Brandon Belt follows the pitch. Belt would provide a home run during the game but it was not enough, as the Giants fell to the Twins, 3-2, on Saturday, June 10 at AT&T Park. Photo by Rich Yee. |

San Francisco Giants Update
|
Tough luck Giants starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija went six innings against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, losing 3-2. Surrendering three runs on four hits and a walk to fall to 2-8 with a 4.31 ERA, Samardzija was hurt by a pair of homers but struck out six and has fanned 65 batters, compared to just two walks over his last eight starts. San Francisco Giants Update:
Sunday afternoon's game at AT&T Park was the classic Dog Days of Summer event for the fans, and with summer soon to arrive, the Giants are still trying to find their rhythm. More than a third of the way through the season the Giants find themselves hovering around the bottom of the National League, with little signs of improvement. A bright spot for the team last week was Eduardo Nunez, who helped lead the Giants offense to three explosions of 7, 9, and 13-run games. This was a welcome sight for an offense which has struggled to score runs. In other news, Joe Panik missed the Twins series with a sprained thumb, but plans on getting back into action this week. The Giants also added bullpen help, acquiring righty Sam Dyson from the Rangers. The team ended the week with a 26-39 record, barely hanging on to fourth place in the NL West. After a day off on Monday, the team will face the Kansas City Royals in a pair of home games before starting a four-game series at Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies. -

Oakland's Ryon Healy (right) jacked a pair of home runs to carry the A's to their win over Toronto on Monday evening. Above, Healy was greeted by teammate Khris Davis after his second home run of the night. Healy is currently third on the A's roster with 14 home runs, behind Yonder Alonso (16) and Davis (17). The A's Liam Hendrix was on the mound on Wednesday, June 7, for a beautiful matinee but Oakland would fall to the visiting Toronto Blue Jays, 7-5. Hendrix pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three. Photo by Michael Zagaris.
|
Oakland Athletics Update:
It's the same old story for the Athletics this week, who are playing solid ball at the Oakland Coliseum but are not able to transfer this level of play to the road. The A's started the week with a pair of wins against the Blue Jays which saw strong performances on both sides of the ball. On offense, the team was able to prevent leaving runners on base, while starters Sean Manaea and Jesse Hahn were able to control Toronto's bats. The A's weren't able to complete the sweep, but competed well in the extra-inning series finale which saw Josh Donaldson lift the Jays over his former team with a 10
th
inning homer. Unfortunately, this same level of play didn't travel with the team to Tampa Bay. After being blown out in the opener on Friday, the A's were able to grab one game during Saturday's doubleheader before losing a close contest on Sunday. In both the Saturday and Sunday losses, the A's had chances to tie or take the lead in the final innings, but were unable to convert these opportunities. The team has Monday off but will stay in Florida for a pair of interleague games against the Marlins before coming home to face the Yankees.

Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon
|
Nearly 2,000 triathletes participated in the 37th annual Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. The elements came into play as high winds were prevalent throughout the day and unsafe conditions on the Bay resulted in the cancellation of the swim portion of the race; the first time in race history. Athletes competed in a modified 18-mile bike/8-mile run format. The winners were Rio Olympian Ben Kanute and Lauren Goss from Boulder, Colorado. Drake-San Anselmo
-- Baseball -- Junior
|
Facing an undefeated Miramonte-Orinda baseball team in the North Coast Section Division III championship game -- just mere miles from the Miramonte campus -- McLaughlin took the mound and spun a complete-game four-hitter. He allowed just one earned run and struck out seven in a 4-3 victory for the Pirates at Saint Mary's College. McLaughlin even helped himself with the bat, ripping a two-run double as part of a three-run fourth inning that gave Drake the lead for good. McLaughlin finished the season with an impressive 9-1 pitching record, a 0.45 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 77 innings of work. Offensively, he hit .321 with 15 RBI and 13 runs scored. Drake finished 25-5 and won its fourth section title and second in three seasons. Photo credit: Berry Evans III/SportStars Magazine. |
