Christopher McCrea Earns Medals at Special Olympics
On Saturday, June 3, 2017 OMHS's Christopher McCrea competed in three equestrian events at the Special Olympics. He earned a gold and bronze medal, as well as a 4th place ribbon in his events on his horse, "Imp."

OM Track Earns Wins at State Championships
OMHS's track team earned several wins at the State Championships at Hughes Stadium on the Morgan State University campus. Read all about it in the  Howard County Times.

OMMS Students Lead Service Project
In partnership with Giant Foods, the 7th grade Student Advisory and Gen Z groups led a service project in which they provided food to over 60 families at SFES, as well as to three other schools. Thanks for helping OM families in need, Falcons!

Talbott Springs Elementary School (TSES)

Congratulations to students on their outstanding presentations at the 2017 TSES Simulated Congressional Hearings!
Fifth grade students "testified" before a panel of judges (elected officials, community members, PTA representatives, and college professors) acting as members of Congress. Students demonstrated their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles and had opportunities to evaluate, take, and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues.

New PTA Board Members
Welcome Christine Alfano and Vera Simmons as our 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents, respectively. Our Vice Presidents were successfully voted in at our Spring Picnic on June 2nd.

The PTA Needs Your Help
The PTA still has several openings for the 2017-18 school year. Please contact Abby Wedeking ( [email protected]) if you are interested or have questions. 

-Halloween Disco Team. (Leader, Concessions, Crafts, Games). The Disco needs several people to plan and execute our fall event. The Event Leader would coordinate with the team to plan food, games, and crafts. Concessions manager would purchase food for event. Games coordinator would organize games. Craft coordinator would plan 1-2 crafts for the event.

-5K & Fun Run Event Team (Race Director, Food, Sponsors, Prizes). The 5K/Fun Run needs several people to plan and execute our spring event. The Race Director would coordinate with team members on all aspects of the event and would work to secure permitting. Food Coordinator would use existing contact to obtain donated post-race food. Sponsor Coordinators would work with previous sponsors and search for new sponsors. Prize Coordinator would search for post-race prize donations.

-BooHoo/Yahoo Breakfast Coordinator. Plan the traditional kindergarten breakfast event. The breakfast occurs the second day of school and is for kindergarten parents only. This is a one-time only job.
 
LITTLE FREE LIBRARY: Family Stewards Needed for the Summer

Class of 2017 Earns a Bright Future
More than 3,800 seniors graduated as members of the Howard County Public School System's Class of 2017. It is an impressive group that   collectively earned nearly $14 million in scholarships for their first year of college.

Last Day of School
Wednesday, June 14 is the last day of school for students. On Tuesday, June 13 and Wednesday, June 14, all schools will close three hours early.

Join Lori Markland, community relations administrator for the Maryland 529 ABLE Plan, to learn more about ABLE accounts, a new way to help individuals with disabilities save money and pay for qualified disability-related expenses.

Board of Education Regular Meeting 
Thursday, June 22, 4:00 PM and 7:30 PM at the Department of Education, 10910 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City
The Howard County Board of Education will hold its regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, June 22, at 4 p.m., with an evening session beginning at 7:30 p.m. Both meetings will be held in the Boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Clarksville Pike in Ellicott City.

The 2017 Feasibility Study will be presented during the evening session. The Feasibility Study is an annual review of long-term capital planning and school attendance area adjustment options. It informs planning, provides strategic information to the school system, and prepares for scheduled school attendance area adjustments.

Both the afternoon and the evening sessions of the Board meeting will begin with a Public Forum, when members of the public may address the Board on any topic other than those for which a formal public hearing process exists. To sign up to speak at Public Forum, contact the Board's office at 410-313-7194. Advanced sign up is preferred.

A-OK Mentoring 
Make a difference! Help enhance the academic and social development of identified Howard County elementary school students in schools near you through a consistent, supportive relationship with a child.  Volunteers must be available weekday, daytime hours to meet one-on-one with an assigned student during the school day or with students in small groups in afterschool programs.

Kids ages 5-11 and their parents are invited to bike the pathways of Oakland Mills with officers from HCPD's Pathway Patrol Section. A brief bicycle safety lesson will be given prior to the ride.

Children ages 9 and under MUST be accompanied by an adult, and helmets MUST be worn.
