TPO Staff Supports Mayors' Fitness Challenge Kick-Off Events
TPO staff supported multiple   Health First 2018 Mayors' Fitness Challenge   kick-off events this weekend, by handing our bike/ped safety education resources and fitting helmets.

This year 12 mayors have joined the challenge and are currently forming teams. The winning team will be determined by the total number of minutes exercised by the members of each team. The municipality with the most points will win the challenger trophy, “Most Fit City.”

Check out our photos from   City of Cape Canaveral- Official Site' United Way of Brevard Movin' in the City - MFC Kick-off Event. The event featured a photo booth, custom bike show competition, local health-and fitness-related vendors, bike helmet fittings by the TPO and lots of giveaways.

TPO Recognizes, Thanks Rockledge Crossing Guards
Per Governor Scott's proclamation, the TPO observed February 2, 2018, as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.

Crossing guards play a critical role in our communities and deserve special recognition for their dedicated service to our students. Every school day, they assist our children across busy streets as they arrive to and depart from school - reinforcing safety education; providing an invaluable service.

TPO staff went out and passed out goodie bags to  City of Rockledge - City Hall   crossing guards in recognition of #CrossingGuardAppreciationDay . These guards rotate between   Brevard Public Schools (official) ' Golfview and Andersen Elementary Schools and Kennedy Middle Schools. More Photos .

FDOT to Host Malabar Rd. PD&E Public Hearing - Feb. 28, 2018
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will host a public hearing for the Malabar Road Project Development and Environment (PD&E) study on February 28, 2018.

A PD&E study is an environmental and engineering process developed by FDOT to determine effects associated with a proposed transportation improvement project. The representatives will present the recommended alternative to widen or improve Malabar Rd. from Babcock to US 1 from a two-lane roadway to a four-lane roadway where warranted.

The hearing is being conducted to give interested persons an opportunity to express their views concerning the location, conceptual design, social, economic, and environmental effects of the proposed improvements. More information .
Cut Costs: Space Coast Area Transit Offers Vanpool Program
Vanpooling  is a great way to save time and money on your commute to work, and there’s no better place in the country to vanpool than Brevard County! For more than 25 years, Space Coast Area Transit and   Enterprise Commute   has offered a wide variety of vans and programs to fit the needs of our community.

The commuter vanpool program is for working professionals who have long commutes on a daily basis and could benefit from sharing those expenses. A group of 7-15 people lease a van from   Enterprise Commute   at a fixed monthly cost that covers the lease payment, maintenance, roadside assistance, and insurance. Employers may provide employees with  tax free vanpool and transit benefits . There are currently over 45 commuter vans on the road, with the majority traveling to the Viera VA Clinic and Kennedy Space Center. Alert Tonight Campaign Reports Fewer
Nighttime Related Bike/Ped Injuries,Fatalities
When Alert Today Alive Tomorrow began its "Alert Tonight" campaign to improve the safety and visibility of pedestrians and bicyclists walking and biking at night, approximately 75% of all serious and fatal injuries occurred during dark or dusk hours.
 
Recently, Alert Today staff pulled data for the most recent 5-year period (2012-2016) and that percentage has dropped to 52%.

This change was a direct result of the district coordinators' efforts.
 
Pedestrian and bicycle crashes with fatal or incapacitating injuries for the period of 2012-2016 by light condition:
 
  • Dark-lighted - 29.34%
  • Dark-not lighted - 17.37%
  • Dark-unknown lighting - 0.32%
  • Dawn - 1.84%
  • Daylight - 47.68%
  • Dusk - 3.19%
  • Other - 0.26%

Total : 100% (15,808)

TPO's Carol Holden Receives Laying Asphalt Award
Finance Clerk, Carol Holden , is responsible for the processing of the TPO’s financial grants and reimbursements through the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

Holden’s Laying Asphalt Award is in recognition of her diligence in getting invoices approved and working within the ever changing guidelines of FDOT. Her exceptional work has been reflected in clean audits and through identifying errors. She has also learned the amendment process and tracking of budgets within the Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP).

Holden’s efforts are appreciated and are being awarded for always going the extra mile to ensure all charges are accurate and processed according to the rules . Congrats, Carol!
