When
Alert Today Alive Tomorrow
began its "Alert Tonight" campaign to improve the safety and visibility of pedestrians and bicyclists walking and biking at night, approximately 75% of all serious and fatal injuries occurred during dark or dusk hours.
Recently, Alert Today staff pulled data for the most recent 5-year period (2012-2016) and that percentage has dropped to 52%.
This change was a direct result of the district coordinators' efforts.
Pedestrian and bicycle crashes with fatal or incapacitating injuries for the period of 2012-2016 by light condition:
- Dark-lighted - 29.34%
- Dark-not lighted - 17.37%
- Dark-unknown lighting - 0.32%
- Dawn - 1.84%
- Daylight - 47.68%
- Dusk - 3.19%
- Other - 0.26%
