Talking Points from Greg:
This article doesn't give details, so here are some general reminders:
Perform good pre-operation inspections.
Make sure the maintenance of the equipment is being performed.
Know your load weights.
Know how to determine the NET capacity of the crane.
Make sure the load weight does not exceed the rated capacity for the crane at the furthest radius to be lifting.
Keep workers out of the fall zone, unless they must be there.

Man suffers broken leg after crane crash...

Talking Points from Greg:
Back to the basics....
Know the load weight.
Know the furthest radius to be lifting or setting.
Know the crane has sufficient rated capacity to lift the load at that radius.

Possible crane collapse after fire...

EMERYVILLE (CBS SF) - Fears of a crane collapse prompted evacuations near a fire-ravaged construction site on the Oakland-Emeryville border on Saturday.

Talking Points from Greg:
The fire likely caused heat damage.  When inspecting equipment, know what you are looking for and where to look.  Especially after a incident such as heat exposure.
Work halted at Facebook site, after crane incident...

State workplace regulators have launched an investigation into the partial collapse of a building under construction on Facebook's Menlo Park campus that sent two ironworkers to the hospital and placed scrutiny on two construction companies that have done work on some of the Bay Area's most high-profile projects.

Talking Points from Greg:
Not many details as to the possible cause, regardless of the what actually happened, here are some reminders:
1.  As much as possible - stay out of the fall zone.  Although it appears these workers were doing what they do....erect steel, those under and around should be aware of the overhead lifting and walk around, outside of the fall zone.
2.  Make sure the rigging is rated for the load.
3.  When working with sharp edges, make the rigging is the appropriate rigging and protected as needed.
4.  Make sure fall protection is worn properly and used correctly.
These rigs don't stop on a dime...nonetheless still sad...

Talking Points from Greg:
Sometimes the most dangerous part of our day is driving down the road......
Regardless of how great of a driver you are, always drive defensively.  Watch the oncoming traffic.  Watch for 4 wheelers turning right in front of you.  Watch for them stopping as soon as they pass you and pull in front of you.  Watch for weaving, or weird acceleration or slowing drivers, often times indicates "distracted drivers", texting for example.  Don't assume everyone else on the road pays attention like you do....

Talking Points from Greg:
Review the manufacturer's recommendations for changing configuration of a crane.  With Tower cranes be sure to follow the provided procedures for "jumping" the crane.  Make sure if fall protection is required, its worn........
