Social Determinants of Family Health:
Expanding Family Nursing Capacity

The IFNA Conference Committee is pleased to announce the theme of the 14th International Family Nursing Conference (IFNC14): "Social Determinants of Family Health: Expanding Family Nursing Capacity." This  conference theme focuses on engaging nurses and interdisciplinary colleagues in discussion of social determinants of health facing families worldwide. With an emphasis on understanding how families are affected by social determinants, IFNC14 will focus on promoting community-engaged learning/collaboration among researchers, clinicians, educators, and community stakeholders to expand the capacity of family nurses for improving family health and well-being.  

IFNC14 will be held in Washington D.C., USA, August 13 - 16, 2019. Conference hashtag: #IFNC14 

FAMILY NURSING PRACTICE NEWS 
Dr. Lisa Whitehead (Australia) is a Professor at Edith Cowan University, Western Australia and has recently been chosen by the Australian College of Nursing to serve as the Chair of the Chronic Disease Policy Chapter . In this role she will have an opportunity to influence nursing care related to chronic illness and encourage a family nursing focus. Dr. Whitehead currently serves as a member of the IFNA Practice Committee. [Read more]

The Portuguese National Nursing Association (Ordem dos Enfermeiros) recently approved the Regulation of the Competencies of Family Health Nurses in Portugal. These competencies were influenced by and adopted from the IFNA Position Statement on Advanced Practice Competencies for Family Nursing and will guide the development of a post-graduate education program and practice internship for becoming a Specialist Nurse in Family Health Nursing in Portugal. FAMILY NURSING EDUCATION NEWS 
Dr. Stacey Van Gelderen (USA)
is an Associate Professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato. She teaches nursing students family history and data collection within classroom and simulation settings. She and her colleagues have developed a Family Care Rubric and she is also using a family-focused electronic health record (SAFE-HR) in her teaching which was developed by Minnesota State University. Dr. Van Gelderen currently serves as a member of the IFNA Education Committee.

Dr. Amanda Garrow (USA) i s a Simulation Education Specialist at Children's National Health System, Washington D.C., and a Lecturer in Nursing at Salford University, United Kingdom. Her current research and practice focuses on improving quality outcomes for children and their families through the use of simulation . Dr. Garrow currently serves as a member of the IFNA Education Committee. [Read more]

FAMILY NURSING RESEARCH NEWS 
Dr. Alison Metcalfe (UK) is currently a Professor of Health Care Research at the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care, King's College London, UK. In April 2018, she will assume a new position as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean for the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing  at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK. Her program of research focuses of the communication of genetic risk information in families. Dr. Metcalfe presently co-leads the new IFNA Chapter UK/Ireland . [Read more]
 
Dr. Linda K. Young (USA ), is a Professor and Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA. She co-led the creation of a baccalaureate nursing program with a strong emphasis on family nursing throughout the curriculum. Dr. Young presently serves as the co-chair of the IFNA Resource Advancement Committee and assisted in leading the first meeting of nursing deans at IFNC13 in Pamplona, Spain. [Read more]

Twelve members of the IFNA Conference Committee, co-chaired by Dr. June Horowitz (USA) and Dr. Sonja Meiers (USA), are meeting monthly by conference call to gather ideas to plan to welcome you to Washington D.C., USA, August 13 - 16, 2019. IFNC14 will be an exciting opportunity for sharing family nursing education, research, practice, and policy expertise and examining innovative advances.
