Healey International Relief Foundation News: May 2017
--Turning Scars Into Stars--
 Report From Sierra Leone

HealeyIRF was pleased to support a surgical mission held by Caritas-Freetown and ACISS (Doctors from Spain) for those in need in the town of Waterloo in Sierra Leone.

Held at the new Christ the King Hospital in Waterloo the five day surgical mission was a great success.   Click here for our May 2017 Report from Sierra Leone and learn more about this mission.
Donated Medicines Distributed Throughout Charity Health Network

With the help of our partner, Brother's Brother Foundation, our third shipment of medicines for 2017 arrived in Sierra Leone in early May and has been distributed to the clinics and hospitals in the Charity Health Network.

The delivery of medicines took the entire week of May 15th with deliveries to each hospital -- Serabu, St. John of God, Holy Spirit and Panguma.  Clinics receiving medicines were Mother Theresa, Father Dan Sullivan, Stella Maris, St. Anthony's, St. Mary's in Moriba Town, Handmaid Pendembu and Our Lady of Guadalupe at Mile 91.

Antibiotics to treat life-threatening infections such as pneumonia and malaria medications are among the most requested by healthcare personnel.  Medicines to treat high blood pressure are also in demand as the incidences of non-communicable diseases are increasing in Sierra Leone.

Capacity Building -- Father Dan Sullivan Clinic

One of the key components to strengthen healthcare in Sierra Leone is through capacity building of healthcare staff.  Training in medical procedures and protocols regarding infection and prevention control will ensure that clinic staff can provide the highest quality of health services to those seeking treatment at our flagship clinic in Newton, the Monsignor Daniel Sullivan Health Clinic.

Last month staff attended a workshop on essential care for newborn babies and others assisted a team of surgeons from the Spanish NGO ACISS in surgical procedures at Christ the King Hospital in Waterloo. Proper hand washing, and infection and prevention control were topics discussed at a district health staff meeting and lessons learned here will be implemented at the clinic.
