Spirit of Bona's Weekend - Sharing our stories, shaping our future
Mike Fenn, Executive Director of Mt. Irenaeus, recaps a fruitful and enriching weekend at the Mountain spent with St. Bonaventure leadership and alumni.

In the height of a Western New York winter, we were blessed with a weekend of warmth in the middle of February, as we hosted an unprecedented retreat with leadership of St. Bonaventure. The weekend's title was, "Listening and Lifting Up the Spirit of Bona's," and the Spirit burst forth through the entire weekend.

What started as a hallway conversation between Fr. Dan and Interim President Dr. Andrew Roth evolved into a weekend of 50 friends up on the Mountain the weekend of February 17. More than 20 alumni from along the East Coast out to the Midwest made the trek, along with a dozen in the school's faculty and administrative leadership, including the university's future president, Dr. Dennis DePerro.

These alumni made the effort to join us this weekend for one primary purpose - to tell their stories. Stories about how they decided as 17-year-olds to go to Bona's, about who their most important teachers were during their four years there (hint - they weren't always in a classroom) and how they impacted the world because they spent these formative years at SBU. This led us to a more traditional brainstorming session where we thought of words and phrases that set the Bonaventure experience apart from other universities ... READ MORE.

Fr. Dan Hurley Legacy Society
Mike Hahn, St. Bonaventure class of 1964, shares why he chose to include Mt. Irenaeus in his will in memory of Fr. Dan Hurley, ofm. The Mountain's new planned giving program launched late last year in Fr. Dan's name to help ensure the Mountain's legacy of "making all things new with Jesus Christ" will prosper for future generations.

Why have I remembered Mt. Irenaeus in my will?
Fr. Dan Hurley, ofm.
The ans wer is simple.  Mt. Irenaeus needs to be financially sustained so that the next generation and the generations to follow can experience the peace, the natural beauty and the spirituality of the Mountain that enables a person to deepen his or her relationship with God. It is to experience the wonderful social interaction of students, alumni, visitors of all faiths and the friars-in-residence at meals, in Holy Peace Chapel or walking the trails packed with snow, lined with spring flowers or surrounded with the blaze of fall foliage. The quiet setting and the natural beauty of the place create a contemplative atmosphere that helps a person develop a personal relationship with God.

It is so fitting that the estate planned giving initiative is entitled The Daniel A. Hurley, ofm Legacy Society. Fr. Dan was a joyful man of God who touched the lives of so many as a teacher on campus, as Bona's national alumni chaplain and as an example of the Franciscan values of love, humility, simplicity and humor. He used these attributes to teach us so much and he always finished his conversation with an infectious laugh that just made a person feel happy and at peace. We are blessed that Fr. Dan Hurley co-founded Mt. Irenaeus and chose to minister there until he passed away in 2010. I would ask everyone who is now reading this tribute to Fr. Dan to take action and make Mt. Irenaeus part of their estate planned giving. Do not wait. Become a member of the Hurley Legacy Society today!
