Greetings Eagle Chapter Members and Friends!

Memorial Day 2017 Arlington Lt Gen Leaf
Above, Eagle Chapter Member - Lt Gen Howard W. Leaf with his son, Patrick's, grave at Arlington with Eagle Chapter's Defensor Fortis flag and 20th Anniversary Streamer

Each Memorial Day, Eagle Chapter participates in three events to help recognize the more than three million women and men who gave that last full measure of devotion to our country.  We place wreaths at the Vietnam War Memorial, Vietnam War Womens Memorial, Korean War Memorial and World War II Memorials in Washington DC. At Arlington, we place a Defensor Fortis Flag on SF members who have been killed in action, association members and families, plus on graves requested by association members and their families - a total of eighteen. We traditionally participate in formal Memorial Day Wreath Laying Ceremonies at the Air Force Memorial and Womens Memorial on Memorial Day.

This year, there is no ceremony at the Air Force Memorial. We are exceptionally honored to have been invited and to participate in the formal wreath laying program at the Womens Memorial. See details in the article below.

Memorial Day is a time for families and friends to spend time together. I encourage everyone to take time to reflect on the selfless sacrifices that our men and women in uniform and their families have made and continue to make on our behalf.  Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

We are starting our 20th anniversary recognition of our US Air Force Security Forces with a streamer placed on every DF flag that we placed at Arlington. We will have more of these at our chapter luncheons.

Thank-you for your continuing support. I hope to see you at one of at our Langley Luncheon on June 5. Please see details below.

Very respectfully,

Lee

New Jersey Cop - Final person to see Security Force Member Bob Gray Alive
The person shown above with me, a New Jersey cop, says he was an SF at the time that Senior Airman Robert Scott Gray was stabbed to death at Clark Air Base The Philippines.  He related that he was one of the responding units to the scene and found Airman Gray losing consciousness. I showed him where to locate the placard that our chapter made for Airman Gray on the memorial. He has my business card. I will provide more information when/if he follows up.

Candlelight Vigil 2017-Thomason
The family behind me adopted me for the night. The lady in the middle has waited 46 years for her father to be recognized and inscribed on the memorial wall.  She is the daughter of Deputy Sheriff Robert T. Thomason of William County TN. Her father, then aged 55, collapsed of a heart attack after he and his partner subdue two belligerent suspects. They also have my card and I'll provide more info if/when they respond.

Brooksher at the AFSFA 18th Annual Meeting
Above, Gen Brooksher intently watches a presentation at the 18th Annual AFSFA Meeting

I regret to inform you of General Brooksher's death. General Brooksher served as the Air Force's Top Cop in October 1978.  I met him during my tour as a shift commander at Bitburg Air Base Germany when and our then top enlisted advisor and career field manager, CMSgt R. J. McLaurine came to Bitburg on a visit to select among the finalists in an annual competition. Bitburg won, by the way.

I would see General Brooksher again when we both attended an AFSFA Annual Meeting (my photo of him above). A strong supporter of AFSFA, General Brooksher was the first president of the Air Force Security Forces Association.

Here are two links that has more information about General Brooksher.
Heather Wilson Sworn in as the 24th Secretary of the Air Force
AF Secretary thanks families and friends following her swearing in ceremony
Secretary Wilson thanks families and friends following her ceremony as the 24th Secretary of the Air Force.

Defense Secretary, Jim Mattis, ceremoniously swore in Heather Wilson as the 24th Secretary of the Air Force at the Pentagon May 16, 2017.

Mattis said he, Wilson and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein are committed to restoring the readiness of the force, modernizing and advancing new capabilities to meet future threats, and developing exceptional leaders to command the finest combat force in the world.

Goldfein and Wilson first served together as cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy where they both took the oath of office for the first time as members of the same class.

AFSFA Pete Magwood Chapter (Albuquerque NM) has spoken very highly to me of Secretary Wilson during her nomination. She previously served in the NM legislature and also representing NM as a member of the House of Representatives.

Also, a very big thanks to the Eagle Chapter Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer, Eli Garrett for working with us to fine tune our preparation for the Langley luncheon and also like me, Eli, will be taking off from work to make this event memorable for the Airmen and families that we support.

Thanks for your continuing support.  I look forward to seeing you at least once in our year to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of our Air Force Security Forces at the Eagle Chapter Luncheon.
