The meeting was called to order by Board of Education President Ralph Martire at
7:01 p.m. in the Roosevelt Middle School Auditorium.  Cal Davis, Judith Deogracias, Barb Hickey, Ralph Martire, Rich Moore, Nicole Thompson, and Stacey Williams were present.

Proposed District 90 School Calendar 2018-19 (First Review)
Dr. Alison Hawley, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, presented the proposed 2018-19 school calendar. She pointed out several elements of the calendar, such as the August 23 start of school for students. The last day of class is scheduled for June 17, including emergency days. Dr. Condon thanked Dr. Hawley and the Calendar Committee for their efforts in devising the 2018-19 school calendar.  Additional information, including the entire presentation, can be viewed in the Board Packet.

Safer Routes to School Meeting with Village of River Forest Officials
Ralph Martire and Dr. Condon recently met with Village officials to discuss safe routes for students walking to school. Mr. Martire complimented the Village officials for reaching out to the Board with the intention of improving student safety while en route to school. Mr. Martire requested that Board members consider approving a proposal to hire a consultant to recommend safer routes for students and share the costs with the Village.

Mr. Martire added that Dr. Condon has been recognized as a Notable Villager of 2017 by the Wednesday Journal. He compliment Dr. Condon for his dedication to the District and his advocacy for issues such as equity and inclusiveness.

Willard Construction Project, Community Presentation - Ed Condon, Anthony Cozzi, and Sven Dahlquist
Anthony Cozzi, Director of Finance and Facilities, presented the plan for the Willard Construction Project. The plan reconfigures several areas of the building in order to create additional learning and office spaces. Additional space is needed because of changes in how student services are being provided, such as for therapy and counseling. The building's renovation will alleviate many of the current space constraints while maintaining the school's current footprint and overall aesthetics.

Dr. Condon expressed his appreciation for the thoughtful design of the additional spaces. He complimented Willard Principal Diane Wood and her faculty for their flexibility in working with the building design. He also complimented architect Sven Dahlquist for his creativity in meeting Willard's needs and Anthony Cozzi for his oversight of the construction's anticipated costs. Education Committee, Nicole Thompson, Chair 

Literacy Committee Update - Alison Hawley, Louisa Starr, Kathleen Fleming, Pamela Moriarty, and Jennifer Ankerberg
Dr. Alison Hawley, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, and several members of the Literacy Committee Louisa Starr, Kathleen Fleming, Pamela Moriarty and Jennifer Ankerberg provided an update on the efforts of the Literacy Committee.

The Literacy Committee initially started as the K-4 Writing Committee and evolved into the current iteration that is addressing reading and writing as reciprocal skills. The presenters explained the Committee's goals, including creating a District vision for balanced literacy, expanding  the understanding of best practices of rigorous literacy programs, and building foundational understanding in students. The presenters discussed K-8 literacy goals and the draft of the K-4   writing framework. The Literacy Committee also plans to review classroom libraries with the intent of increasing the diversity of student reading materials. Additional information can be viewed in the Board Packet

Strategic Plan Progress Update - Ed Condon and Dawne Simmons
Dr. Condon provided Board members with an update on the progress of the Strategic Plan and its Action Objectives for 2017-18. He share the new Action Objectives for the year, as well as the teams of parents and administrators tasked with implementing the Action Objective Goals. Dr. Condon reviewed the five major goals of the Strategic Plan and explained that some of the Action Objective Goals represented multi-year goals while others represent items that can be achieved within one school year. Review of Elementary Math Acceleration Model - Ed Condon and Alison Hawley
Dr. Condon and Dr. Alison Hawley, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, returned to an earlier Board discussion regarding the math acceleration program, which is currently under review. Board members had requested a recommendation about the suitability of the current structure of the accelerated math program. Dr. Hawley explained that OPRF High School and District 97 are also reviewing their accelerated math programs. She relayed that the current acceleration model will continue during the review and that the District's recommendation will likely be presented in the fall.
