April Community Forum: What's New About Climate Change?

Wednesday, April 19, noon-2 p.m.

Dr. Karl Hutterer, who teaches climate change for the Vistas Lifelong Learning program and former executive director of the Museum of Natural History, will discuss what we are learning today about the rapid changes in climate and its effects around the world.

Michael Chiacos, interim energy director for the Community Environmental Council (CEC), will talk about the many actions that can be taken to reach the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This year there has been important new information about hydrogen batteries, as well as other innovations.

Aeron Genet, the new director of the Air Pollution Control District, will talk about new regulations controlling air quality in the state.

Bring friends and your lunch. Beverages will be provided. Parking is free during the meeting.

Earth Day Volunteers Needed

LWVSB will have a booth at Earth Day, on Saturday, April 22 at Alameda Park. We will be registering voters and talking about the League position on Climate Change and other important issues. Please call the office at 965-2422 or send us an email if you would like to volunteer for an hour or two.

March for Science on Earth Day

Saturday, April 22, 11am-2pm, De La Guerra Plaza, Santa Barbara

The March for Science is a celebration of our passion for science and a call to support and safeguard the scientific community. Speechs will begin at 11 am followed at noon by a march down State St and back up, ending at Earth Day Festival in Alameda Park. Participants are encouraged to bring signs and lab coats.

PEOPLE'S MARCH FOR CLIMATE,
JUSTICE AND JOBS

Saturday, April 29, 12-2 pm, La Playa Stadium at Santa Barbara City College

On Trump's 100th day in office, environmental and climate justice organizations are calling for a march in Washington, DC, New York, and around the world. The League of Women Voters of the United States is participating in the DC March.
Join community members, workers, youth, businesses, public officials, and Chumash tribal representatives in action on behalf of the climate! Bring signs to join in a community message of hope for the world as Santa Barbara, birthplace of the modern environmental movement, continues to fight for our planet and our future in the years to come.

Participants are encouraged to come "car-free" to this event. The Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition will offer bike valet in the La Playa Stadium parking lot.

Legislation is moving fast these days so it is hard to stay informed on every issue. The best way is to sign up for League updates and action alerts.

This year, legislation is moving very fast so there are frequent Action Alerts. One surprising one is about a move toward a Constitutional Convention for a balanced-budget amendment. Read the reasons for the LWVUS position against such a convention.

May Units: The City of Santa Barbara Faces New Housing Dilemma
For the first time in many years the City of Santa
Barbara is facing a proposed l,000 plus new housing units in the pipeline, and there is a question about what impacts they will have.

Both the Social Policy and Sustainable Communities
Committees of LWVSB have been following the Average Unit Density (AUD) experiment closely, and are working together to develop League policy about them. The units offer a chance for members to learn more and express their views.

times. Note that the Val Verde unit is now meeting downtown at the League office, 328 E. Carrillo St., Suite A.
