A Brooklyn distiller and his two-headed monster
are turning craft beer into whiskey
by Meredith Heil, Vinepair
|
Kyrejko's process allows liquid to boil at a much lower temperature.
|
Dave Kyrejko loves beer. He also loves whiskey and science. And that's where the monster comes in.
"Yep, it's the two-headed monster," Kyrejko tells me. "That's the official name." We're standing inside Interboro Spirits and Ales, an airy warehouse-turned-craft-brewery in an industrial stretch of East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Arcane Distilling, Kyrejko's micro-distilling venture, has been operating out of the space since June 2017, and at the heart of it is the monster: a towering, two-tiered vacuum still made up of bubbling glass orbs, coils, tubes, and metal odds and ends. It's basically the coolest chemistry set you've ever seen. Why? Because it turns delicious craft beer into equally delicious craft whiskey.

Here's why it's hard for Texans to get
alcohol shipped directly to them
by Alex Samuels, The Texas Tribune
Texas liquor laws are infamously complex, and the reason dates back to the end of Prohibition. That was when states began creating their own regulatory structures to administer the production and sale of alcohol - and when Texas, in an effort to stop manufacturers from cozying up to retailers, opted for a system that separates the process into three tiers..
.
Texas law - specifically, the Alcoholic Beverage Code - only allows businesses with an appropriate permit to sell alcohol to consumers. So if you want to buy booze, you need to get it from a retailer (e.g., a grocery store, convenience store, bar or restaurant). The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission oversees all three tiers - and issues separate permits and licenses for each. This is where the confusion starts. Read more.

Mississippi closer to new alcohol laws
by William Folkes, WCBI News
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippians are getting closer to being able to buy alcohol at distilleries and carry alcohol through dry counties without fear of arrest.
House members on Wednesday approved the measures, sending them to the Senate for more debate.
House Bill 192 says people could carry alcohol, wine and beer through dry areas on a state or federal highway if containers are unopened.
Right now, people can be charged for possessing alcohol in a dry county. Such charges can be aimed at bootleggers.

Growing demand for gin made in a spare bedroom
by Hilarie Stelfox, Huddersfield Examiner [UK]
|
'I've turned my daughter's old bedroom into a distillery' says Jacqueline Duigan, founder of JacqSon Yorkshire Dry Gin.
|
There's been a 'gin-aissance' among drinkers in the UK over the past few years. The spirit, once known as 'mother's ruin' has become the trendiest and fastest-growing tipple on the market. According to the Wine and Spirit Trade Association, in 2017 we bought more than 47m bottles of gin - and that was seven million more than the year before.
Craft distilleries are springing up just about everywhere. Even in spare bedrooms in Huddersfield. Part-time music teacher Dr Jacqueline Dumigan, for example, is enjoying an unexpected but satisfying new career as a distiller, operating out of her daughter Natasha's former bedroom in her Netherton home.
